General Summary of Position
Provides professional nursing care for outpatientclinic patients in the Pediatric Mobile Van, following establishedstandards and practices. Duties include, but are not limited to patientassessment, procedure assistance, patient teaching, and telephone triage. Position will be the RN for the Kids Mobile Medical Unit which is based in the Community at various locations throughout the week.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs quality professional nursing service in outpatient clinical setting including, but not limited to: patient assessment, performing procedures, administering medications, patient education, and telephone triage, advising LPN and MA in delivery of nursing care.
  • Greets patients and prepares them for examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in the collection of samples and tests.
  • Prepares equipment and assists physicians during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
  • Observes, records, and reports patient's condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and procedures to physicians. Administers prescribed medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards and GUH policies and procedures.
  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results. Obtains and reviews consent forms, treatment plans, and side effects as appropriate. Discusses potential complications with patient and family.
  • Assess patient need, concerns and problems through direct patient interaction or telephone triage.
  • Educates patient and family about diagnostic procedures, surgeries, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness. Schedules in services and education sessions with patients and families.
  • Assists as needed with in-office procedures, including but not limited to: radiofrequency ablations; thoracentesis; incision and drainage; biopsy.
  • Performs quality control functions of assigned area as directed. Participates in activities to develop and implement quality improvement activities within the practice area.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with personnel in other divisions and departments.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
  • Act as a resource for LPN and MA in Department, and provide coverage as needed.
  • Maintains an active role in evaluating efficiency of patient care and collaborating with Nurse Manager and MD for continued process improvements.
  • Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations and exemplifies MedStar's SPIRIT values in behaviors in all activities.
  • Assists surgeons and practitioners in preparing patients for surgery: ensuring pre-op clearances/labs obtained; provide pre-op instructions (e.g. bowel prep, NPO after midnight, etc.).
  • Promote patient experience by focusing on departmental key drivers and helping to develop action plans to improve key drivers.

  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required and
    • B.S.N. preferred and
    • Consideration will be given to an appropriate combination of education/training and experience required

    Experience
    • 1-2 years 2 years of professional nursing experince required and
    • 1-2 years Previous outpatient experience highly desirable.

    Licenses and Certifications
    • Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia / Maryland / Virginia required and
    • CPR certification required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
    • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
    • Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care.
    • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public.
    • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
