The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) serves Coloradans by providing high-quality, and cost-effective public health and environmental protection services that promote healthy people in healthy places. The Work Unit:
Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response (DCPHR) -"The Division of Disease Control and Public Health Response exists to ensure that the Department has the ability to effectively monitor, detect, diagnose, prepare for, and nimbly respond to, all types of conditions and events that impact the public's health."
The purpose of the Communicable Disease Branch (CDB) is to monitor, investigate, and control epidemic and communicable diseases affecting the public health in Colorado, as required under Colorado statute including: invasive bacterial diseases; foodborne/enteric diseases; waterborne diseases; respiratory diseases; vaccine preventable diseases; healthcare-associated infections; tuberculosis; COVID-19; and zoonotic/vectorborne diseases.
What You Will Be Doing:
This position exists to assist in performing surveillance for respiratory-associated hospitalizations (COVID-19, Influenza, and RSV) by collecting medical, epidemiologic, and other data as well as managing health information. The position works closely with respiratory disease epidemiologists, other Medical Record Abstractors, the project coordinator, and the principal investigator to determine priorities for data collection in order to meet changing and conflicting project objectives in a timely manner. This position applies knowledge of each of the conditions being studied and of Medical Records organization, related databases, medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and medical information management procedures to assure comprehensive data collection and data quality. This position serves as a liaison between CDPHE and the staff at hospital Medical Records departments and other sources of data. The position serves as a resource to help with new surveillance officer training and case report form clarification. This position also assists with data validation and cleaning to ensure completeness and correctness of data.
Responsibilities of the position include but not limited to:
  • Conduct enhanced case surveillance for COVID-19, RSV, and influenza-associated hospitalizations by conducting in depth Medical Record reviews using standardized data collection forms to collect demographic, clinical risk factor, treatment and laboratory information.
  • Enter data collected into central REDCap databases and track reported cases and completion of record reviews. Help answer fellow surveillance officer questions to assist others with Medical Record abstraction.
  • Identify respiratory- associated hospitalizations that are reported to CDPHE via multiple mechanisms to ensure they meet case definition.
  • Enter unreported or missing information into the communicable disease database.
  • Based on lists provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or project site staff or internal CDPHE staff, validate data that has been marked as possibly erroneous and complete missing data from record abstraction or data migration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Option 1

Four (4) years of relevant experience in disease reporting, epidemiology, health data management, health data analysis, medical chart abstraction or other closely related experience aligned to the work assigned to the position.


OR


Option 2
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in science, epidemiology, public health or other closely related field.
OR
Option 3
An advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate) from an accredited college or university in science, epidemiology, public health or other closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the minimum requirements, the successful candidate in this position will have the following highly desirable experience and competencies:
  • Relevant experience with the State of Colorado
  • Experience in collecting and entering data.
  • Experience with communicable disease surveillance data.
  • Experience abstracting information from electronic Medical Records using standardized case report form.
  • Experience navigating a variety of electronic Medical Record platforms such as EPIC and PC 360.
  • Experience working with relational databases such as REDCap and CEDRS.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Pursuant to CDPHE policy, a background check is required for all positions at CDPHE.
  • Critical Status: Must be available in the event of an emergency, (e.g., bio-terrorist attack, chemical attack, disease outbreak or all hazards) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
  • Critical Status: Must be available in the event of the activation of the Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) and be required to report to work immediately at the regular or alternate location. During this time, travel restrictions may be in place.
  • Position may travel to hospitals, trainings, or conferences 1-3 trips a year , may involve an overnight stay depending on the location.
