Summary/Objective
Provide assistance in wildlife management activities.
Essential Job Duties
  • Assisting science staff with targeted collection of Flathead Catfish in multiple small impoundments and large reservoirs throughout the state using boat electrofishing and set line gears.
  • Assist in the preparation, organization and maintenance (in cooperation with Equipment Shop Technician) of all boat electrofishing equipment, boats, outboard motors, trucks, trailers and additional sampling gear.
  • Develop skills in cleaning, sectioning and mounting catfish spines and otoliths in a laboratory setting and will coordinate with other staff in logging, photographing, and cataloging all catfish spines and otoliths for aging in an organized database.
  • Expected to understand all aspects of the sampling protocol while leading other staff in the work team.
  • Developed (but not limited to) are using GPS and GIS technology (e.g., side-scan sonar, Trimble units, and ArcGIS) to map habitats (e.g., bathymetric contour maps) and sampling locations of Flathead Catfish.
  • Assist with data entry in MS Excel, MS Access, FINS, and ArcGIS. This position will have the opportunity to assist with other ongoing projects and attend MDC training courses as needed.

Education and Experience
  • Preferred candidates will be pursuing or have a degree in Fisheries, Biological Sciences, Natural Resources, Zoology or related subject.
  • Must maintain a valid, current driver's license.
  • Experience driving 4x4 trucks and towing/backing trailers is highly desired.
  • Boating skills on lakes preferred
  • Willing to complete Department provided CPR/1st Aid Certification, if not already certified.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Applicant must be highly organized, detail oriented, and possess outstanding oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight occasionally.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Develop and sustain cooperative working relationships with a work team crew.
  • Ability to keep an accurate record of supplies, services and time reports.
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS and/or GPS tools (e.g., sonar units) is preferred
  • Applicants who are born after January 1, 1984, need to be Missouri Boater Safety Certified or will need to obtain certification within one month of employment

Work Environment
  • Frequently work in outdoor weather.
  • Occasional travel and/or overnight may be required.
  • Occasionally work in outdoor weather environments (cold/hot/humid/wet).

Physical Abilities
  • Move about grounds, both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more, and three-dimensional vision
  • Concentrated attention is required at all times.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 60 lbs.

Exemption Status/Special Notes
This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
