Job description

Resource Attorneys will be primary liaisons between the MAC Office and individual courts. Resource Attorneys will be responsible for the following: assisting with managing appointments of attorneys deemed eligible to accept misdemeanor appointments; monitoring caseloads among MAC-Appointed Attorneys; providing resources, support and oversight to MAC-Appointed Attorneys; and assistance with day-to-day problem resolution in discovery, litigation, or trial issues. A Resource Attorney will be one of four--providing a ratio of one Resource Attorney in direct management of teams of attorneys on the MAC appointment list.
Resource attorneys will handle conflict resolution on behalf of attorneys between clients, prosecutors, or judges should they arise. Resource attorneys will be available to sit with attorneys as first or second chair counsel if necessary. Resource attorneys will be responsible for monitoring and maintaining legal resources made available through the MAC--physically and electronically--for attorneys in their work of appointed cases only. Resource attorneys will assist both the Misdemeanor Division Chief/Training Director with training duties as needed and Legal Operations Director with operational duties as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Managing assignments of attorneys deemed eligible to accept misdemeanor appointments.
  • Monitoring caseloads among MAC-Appointed Attorneys.
  • Managing problem resolution in discovery, litigation, or trial issues as well as conflict resolution on behalf of the court appointed attorneys between clients, prosecutors, or judges should they arise.
  • Monitoring and maintaining legal resources made available through the MAC.
  • Assisting Misdemeanor Division Chief & Training Director & Legal Operations Director with training and operational duties as needed.

    • A current letter of good standing from your state bar of practice.

Education and Experience:
  • A Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law college or university.
  • A Texas law license in good standing
    • OR proof of submission for admission without examination with 30 days of acceptance of offer is required (permission of submissions beyond 30 days are based upon exigent circumstances and within Executive Director's discretion).
  • At least five (5) years experience as a criminal trial attorney, with a significant portion of that time having represented criminal defendants.
  • Jury trial experience required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Solid understanding of Texas criminal law, procedure, and evidence.
  • Must be able to manage and teach other attorneys, and to practice law in a large institutional environment.
  • Must possess deep knowledge of trial skills as well as the ability to teach them.

  • Applicants who are currently licensed to practice in Texas.

  • At least five (5) jury trials as lead counsel.

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
  • Grant-funded Full-time
  • Monday - Friday | 40 hours per week
    • Nights and weekends as necessary

Salary:
  • $102,000 - $112,000 Annually
  • Depends on Qualifications
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods

Work Environment:
  • This job operates in a professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  • Jail visits when necessary.

Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
