Safe Harbor’s mission is to provide emergency housing, food, and access to support services in a structured environment for unhoused single men and women in Chester County. Founded in 1995, Safe Harbor is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization with 8 full-time staff, 20 part-time employees and over 400 volunteers.
As a Resident Shelter Assistant, you will play a crucial role in providing support and assistance to homeless individuals in need. This position requires empathy, patience, and a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of those experiencing homelessness.
We are currently hiring for a part time overnight staff for the following schedule, with some flexibility:
Sunday 10:30pm to 8 am
Monday 10:30pm to 8 am
Key Responsibilities:
Client Support and Care: Welcome and check in residents. Assist residents with their evening, overnight and early morning routines and activities of daily living.
Offer emotional support, active listening, and a non-judgmental presence.
Safety and Security: Maintain a safe and secure environment within the shelter.
Monitor and ensure compliance with shelter rules and policies. Respond to emergencies or incidents as necessary, including contacting emergency services if needed.
Facility Maintenance: Ensure the shelter is clean, organized, and well-maintained.
Assist with setting up and serving meals as needed and maintaining common areas.
Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate records of shelter occupants and activities.
Assist with documenting incidents and reporting them to appropriate staff.
Collaboration: Work closely with shelter staff, social workers, and volunteers to provide comprehensive support to clients.
Qualifications:
- Compassion, empathy, and a strong desire to help homeless individuals and families.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes challenging environment.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional relevant training or education is a plus.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping purposes.
- Knowledge of local social services and resources is advantageous.
