Job Number: 01631
Department: Residential Life - Prep School
Opening Date: 03/15/2023
Position Summary
Saint John's Prep invites applications for the full-time (.80fte), benefit eligible position of Resident Director.
Since its founding in 1857, Saint John's Preparatory School has provided exceptional education in the Catholic Benedictine tradition. Saint John's Preparatory School is a Catholic/Benedictine, co-educational, day and college preparatory school for students in grades 6-12, with boarding options beginning in the 9th grade. Saint John's Prep is located on the 3,000 acres of woods and lakes of Saint John's University's campus in central Minnesota. Prep has continuously dedicated itself to both educational development and personal formation.
Benedictine education calls for a lively interplay between rigorous thinking and the development of practices for a purpose-filled life.
Resident Directors work collaboratively to monitor and support Saint Michael Residence Hall, a newly renovated space connected to Saint John's Prep. RDs are expected to utilize their independent judgment when making decisions related to residential students' supervision. They are expected to be prepared to make critical, sometimes life-impacting decisions as the first responder for students' needs during non-office hours, including nights and weekends.
RDs will oversee and interact dynamically with students in the hall; suggest, create, and participate in activities; communicate with school personnel as needed; make decisions related to discipline and safety issues and administer medications and other duties.
Responsibilities

  2. Create an academically focused residential environment that supports student success and learning. Successfully merge student goals with teachers, guidance counselors, and parent communications to promote academic achievement.
  3. Weekly develop, implement, and promote community events to establish connections and relationships. Merge programming ideas grounded in best practices and institutions' values.

  6. Demonstrate inclusive behavior and create a socially just community where differences are celebrated. Bring together students from many different countries to develop an internationally focused community. To make this community will require professional development.
  7. Serve on an on-call rotation to cover nights and weekends and act as the first responder to residential concerns and issues. As the first responder, your decision in crisis will be critical to our student's success and well-being.
  8. Monitor and promote community spaces with residential and day students after school in Saint Michael Hall at the After School Study Program. RDs will supervise all students who stay beyond the bell (3:15 pm on school days) in the common spaces.
  9. Responsible for facilitating school safety programs, including disaster preparedness, emergency drills, safe environment training, and related safety training.
  10. Document any violations of the residential policies; serve as a conduct officer as needed.
  11. Directly monitor and support residents' academic, emotional, developmental needs and progress by facilitating essential medical requirements to minors, transporting them to medical/dental appointments, and advocating their needs to third-party persons.
  12. Monitor and assess the physical environment of the residence hall through on-duty rounds. Facilitate the resolution of facility concerns, maintenance, repairs, and cleanliness. Monitor and report any concerns.
  13. Work within the provided budget for residence hall programming funds.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life.
