JOB DESCRIPTON

JOB TITLE: Resident Care Assistant Cottages

REPORTS TO: Facility Services Manager

JOB SUMMARY:

The primary purpose of this position is to provide dietary, housekeeping and life enrichment support to the residents at the Cottages.

DELEGATION OF AUTHORITY:

As a Cottages Resident Care Assistant you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND EDUCATION REQUIRED:

A high school education or equivalent is desired.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Dietary Functions:

  • Prepare breakfast for residents taking into account any special dietary needs and personal preferences.
  • Handle and prepare foods and fluids in accordance with sanitary regulations.
  • Set up and clear dining tables. Clean dining rooms after meal time, including washing linens and dishes.
  • Assist with prepping other food as requested, taking orders, serving dining meals and drinks.

  • Perform all other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor.

Housekeeping & Laundry Functions:

  • Clean living rooms, restrooms, laundry rooms, resident rooms and common areas.
  • Empty trash containers daily and wash trash container weekly.
  • Restock paper towels, toilet paper, trash bags, hand soap, and hand sanitizer as needed.
  • Follow all established safety procedure and precautions for use of cleaning supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with laundry services as needed.
  • Contribute to a clean, well-organized and pleasant environment for all residents.

Life Enrichment Functions:

  • Identify activities that appeal to Cottage residents and encourage socialization and participation in those activities.
  • Assist in creating and distributing a monthly calendar of events.
  • Maintain daily activity attendance of residents.
  • Help plan special programs and entertainment.
  • Maintain files and other records as directed. Type letters, reports, statements, minutes of meetings, agendas, etc. as necessary/directed.

Personal Functions:

  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with our established policies and procedures, and as instructed by your supervisors.
  • Follow work assignments and/or work schedules in completing and performing your assigned tasks.
  • Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other facility personnel to ensure that all services can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents.
  • Create and maintain as atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positive emphasis as well as a calm environment throughout the neighborhood and shift.
  • Meet with your neighborhood personnel on a regular scheduled basis to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas and/or the improvement of services.
  • Report all complaints and grievances made by residents to Charge Nurse.
  • Attend and participate in staff development programs and activities that are required.

Safety and Sanitation:

  • Participate in an in-service training program prior to performing tasks that involve potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
  • Wash hands before and after performing any service for the resident.
  • Immediately notify the Charge Nurse of any resident leaving/ missing from the facility.
  • Follow established safety precautions in the performance of all duties.
  • Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to the Charge Nurse immediately.
  • Report all safety violations.
  • Use only the equipment you have been trained to use. Operate all equipment in a safe manner. Inform supervisor of your equipment and supply needs.

RESIDENT RIGHTS:

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all Resident Care information.
  • Ensure that you treat all residents fairly and with kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy.
  • Knock before entering the resident’s room.
  • Report all grievances and complaints made by the resident to the Nurse Leader/ Neighborhood Nurse.
  • Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property to Nurse Leader/Neighborhood Nurse immediately.
  • Honor the resident’s refusal of treatment request. Ensure that such requests are in accordance with facility’s policies governing advance directives. Discuss refusal of treatment with the Nurse Leader/Neighborhood Nurse for appropriate follow-up.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Works throughout the Cottages, including common living rooms, dining rooms, kitchen, laundry room and resident rooms.
  • Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during working hours.
  • Is subject to frequent interruptions.
  • Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies/personnel, etc., under all circumstances.
  • Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, and visitors.
  • Communicates with Certified Nursing Assistants, Charge Nurses, dietary staff and other department personnel.
  • Attends mandatory in-services and the yearly requirement of 12 hours of in-service education.
  • Works beyond normal working hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
  • Is subject to falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday.
  • Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.
  • Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies/personnel and the general public.
  • Must possess leadership ability and willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel.
  • Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level at which they are currently functioning.
  • Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing activity services.
  • Must be able to relate information concerning a resident’s condition.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

(With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices)

  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately to ensure that the requirements of the position can be fully met.
  • Must function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
  • Must be able to lift, push, pull, and move a minimum of 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.
