Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.
We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 2,800 majors and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. The department is composed of 50 tenure-track faculty, 10 teaching faculty, 8 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty. We currently have 50 graduate students, 40 post-docs and employ approximately 60 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Our mission is supported by an administrative and technical staff of 20, with an additional 25 staff directly supporting research.
Research Professor will conduct research for lab funded through 2025. Two major federal grants and three additional projects are in approval process.
1. NIH-funded project to decipher the phosphorylation bar-code of a 7-transmembrane AtRGS1 and its substrate AtGPA1 that controls the switch behavior in plant and protist cells responding to many biotic and abiotic signals,
2. NSF-funded project on the role of the environment in sculpting the genome through evolution,
3. Theoretical approaches to design drugs to treat human disease (currently unfunded)
4. New herbicides and growth regulators for US agriculture (currently unfunded)
5. Micronutrient detection by plants (currently unfunded)
The Research Professor will also mentor postdocs and lead lab manager, represent UNC and the granting agencies funding the projects at conferences and meetings with collaborators (presently committed to two events before July 1, 2024). Research and office space to be negotiated. Will need full access to UNC informatics services including libraries and super-computer services
Ph.D.in Biology or related field
