Job description

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Research Lab tech III performs a variety of moderately complex and generally standardized physical, chemical, or biological tests that require the use of independent judgement in support of non-clinical laboratory study activities, including Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) studies. Provides direction and guidance to lab staff.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, or other related science, with two years' of related clinical/research experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Master's degree in biology or related physical science preferred.

SKILLS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to listen and communicate effectively
  • Basic computer skills
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to interact with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Research Technical Functions

  • Prepare animals for surgical and medical procedures; including, clipping and disinfecting surgical sites; administrations of sedatives and anesthesia; monitoring anesthesia; recover animals from anesthesia.
  • Calculate and prepare drug dosages and maintain controlled drug log.
  • Blood and specimen collection for evaluation. 
  • Provide animal restraint during examinations and treatment.
  • Coordinate animal care, feeding and transportation logistics with ARP staff.
  • Coordinate animal necropsy and disposal with ARP staff.
  • Collaborate with other investigators in performance of specific research procedures 
  • Perform minor surgical procedures
  • Assist  primary surgeon in surgical procedures
  • Monitor the health of animals on study and make immediate decisions in consultation with the study director regarding appropriate medical care. Health monitoring includes weekend observations.
  • Act as Lead Technician, with limited oversight from the Study Director, on assigned study protocols.
  • Provide training and guidance to other lab personnel in all perioperative procedures

Research Data and Administrative Functions

  • Contribute to the development of sponsor protocols and study reports
  • Write, review and update procedural and equipment SOPs and GLP documents as necessary.
  • Write or co-author IACUC study protocols 
  • Generate data for preclinical studies in compliance with PTS SOPs and GLP requirements.
  • Independently manage and perform Quality Control (QC) checks on study data in a format structured for study reports and presentations 
  • Ensure projects are in compliance with local and federal requirements such as IACUC, GLP, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and Occupational Health and Safety guidelines 
  • As needed, review scientific journals, abstracts and other research literature to obtain or verify information used in the design and development of protocols, procedures or techniques related to pre-clinical operations
  • Manage scheduling and progress of research studies
  • With limited supervision, provide training and guidance to other lab personnel in data QC, IACUC protocols and SOP training.

Research Operational and Facility Functions

  • Prepare OR and other facilities for surgery or study procedures, scheduled tests, experiments and/or operations
  • Order supplies, materials and drugs needed to support studies
  • Assist with the maintenance of inventory of supplies, equipment, medications and other drugs.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments
  • Assist with the maintenance of equipment and machines, including calibrations.
  • Assist with the purchase of lab equipment
  • Provide training and guidance to other lab personnel on operational and facility functions.

  • Research laboratory environment
  • Frequent exposure to diseases, medicinal preparations and other conditions common in a lab environment
  • Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection)
  • Exposure to glass and other breakable objects
  • Exposure to animals
