Onsite - Position requires an employee to be onsite on a full-time basis.

This job is not eligible for relocation benefits. Any relocation costs would be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

The Role:

As a valued Technician within the Research and Development team here at GM, you are responsible for the complete support of research laboratory where decisions are made to problem solve in the fast-changing test environment of electrification technology. You will use independent judgment and will receive direct mentorship from peer support staff, researchers and/or engineers.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Work closely with multi-disciplined engineering and support teams to understand functional requirements and implement appropriate solutions.

  • Troubleshoot multi-faceted electrical, electro-mechanical problems down to component level.

  • Implement design and technical changes as required.

  • Collect data from secondary sources and assist the team in identifying new and unique information sources.

  • Ensure test instrumentation meets calibration requirements.

  • Support the execution of qualitative and quantitative primary research.

  • Translate data into meaningful insights and recommendations.

  • Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal customers in a timely manner.

  • Communicate information to internal / external partners and to quickly find common ground with peers and solve problems for the good of the project.

  • Identify and correct inventory shortages for new project installations and spare parts.

  • Passionate about continuous improvement related to test instrumentation and laboratory equipment processes.

  • Provide specifications and identify potential suppliers for unique test equipment integration.

  • Detailed documentation of all test installation changes and improvements

  • Optimally deal with ambiguity and can cope with change.

  • Understand and follow GM Workplace Safety System and GMS 5S – Workplace Organization standards.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Associate degree in electronics / instrumentation, electronics technology, engineering technology and/or 1 to 3+ years of relevant work experience in a research laboratory test environment

  • Understanding of electronics theory and principles of operation of electrical, electro-mechanical and mechanical systems and sub-systems

  • High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult.

  • Demonstrated ability to read / understand / generate technical data, electric diagrams, and schematics.

  • Demonstrated ability to use data driven problem solving techniques in the fast- changing test environment.

  • Proven experience in troubleshooting circuits, sensors, transducers, motors, actuators, etc., commonly used in laboratory environment.

  • Hands-on ability to read and understand electronics schematics, as well as design and fabricate unique test instrumentation used in research laboratory environment.

  • Experience with setup and troubleshooting of various communications protocols, e.g., Serial, Ethernet, Firewire, CAN, ASAP3, etc.

  • Experience with the installation, setup, operation and troubleshooting of test support equipment such as data I/O, power conditioning and measurement systems, fluid (air, oil, coolant) conditioning systems, fluid measurement, electric motors, etc.

  • Experience troubleshooting and repair of motor control circuits and equipment including VFD’s for rotating equipment.

  • Experience with research test equipment used in calibration, automated testing, data logging, etc.

  • Experience with temperature controllers, PID loops, 4-20 mA current loops and all other closed loop feedback systems

  • Familiar with the principles of preventative maintenance and calibration techniques consistent with ISO 17025

  • Strong general machine shop knowledge and material fabrication skills following all safe operating procedures.

  • Self-starter with excellent organization and time-management skills able to structure own work and work independently.

  • High level of sociability and work ethic

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science in electronics / instrumentation, electronics technology, electrical engineering technology and/or combined with 5+ years relevant applicable experience.

  • Experience crafting standardized work and documentation for Preventative Maintenance and Calibration consistent with ISO 17025

  • Repair and troubleshoot electrical and instrumentation equipment ranging from small motors to larger services up to and including 480 VAC.

  • Knowledge of vehicle hybrid / electrification technology (e.g., electric motors, AC inverter, DC/DC converter, On-board charger, High voltage battery systems, etc.)

  • Knowledge in electronics board design

  • Understanding of various software platforms commonly found in a test development environment, e.g., NI Labview®, VeriStand®, Flexlogger®, etc.

  • Familiar with the setup and troubleshooting of equipment used for emissions measurement, e.g. Combustion particulate analyzers, MKS MultiGas 2030 FTIR gas analyzers, etc.

  • Good understanding of the global electric vehicle landscape

  • Experience with eSAP and other purchasing systems

  • Experience with GEETS or other equipment inventory tracking system

  • Knowledge of battery cycler test systems
