Department Summary

The Institute for Fundamental Science (IFS) enhances the experimental, theoretical, and astronomy research activities at the University of Oregon. IFS is one of several centers and institutes supported by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation and maintains a close relationship with the Department of Physics as well as the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Mathematics.
The IFS experimental high energy physics group consists of physics faculty members James Brau, Laura Jeanty, Stephanie Majewski, David Strom, and Eric Torrence.

Position Summary

The Research Engineer position will provide key contributions to the firmware used in the hardware trigger of the ATLAS experiment.
We are seeking an experienced FPGA engineer to develop and implement firmware for the upgrades to the Trigger and Data Acquisition System on the ATLAS experiment (http://atlas.cern). The University of Oregon has key roles in aggregating and processing real-time data from the ATLAS detector for the Global Feature Extractor (gFEX) and Global Trigger systems.
The successful candidate will collaborate with physicists and engineers at the University of Oregon and other institutions in the U.S. and abroad. The position may be based at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon, or at CERN, an international particle physics laboratory outside of Geneva, Switzerland.
This position is a 12-month Career Non-Tenure-Track Faculty (CNTTF) position in the Engineer classification series. The position's responsibilities are guided by the Physics Department's NTTF Professional Responsibilities Policy, United Academics Collective Bargaining Agreement, and the Physics Department's NTTF Policy for Promotion and Review. The position will be jointly supervised by David Strom and Stephanie Majewski.

Minimum Requirements

Research Engineer:
Master's degree in engineering or related field.
Five years of work experience related to the position, or equivalent combination of additional education and experience.

Professional Competencies

Working or proficient knowledge in Verilog and VHDL and FPGA design principles.
Experience/Interest in the Xilinx Vivado toolset and UltraScale+ devices.
Proficient knowledge of scripting languages (Python and/or TCL).
Strong ability to communicate effectively to report on project progress.
Ability to collaborate with senior engineering and scientific staff to design and develop special-purpose equipment and/or systems.
Demonstrated ability to comply with health and safety policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate with a diverse work staff.
