I. JOB OVERVIEW
Job Description Summary:
The Research Enhancement Officer is responsible for leading the Research Enhancement Unit (REU) at the George Washington University (GW), which is a central administrative unit within the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR). A large part of REU's mission is to advance the competitiveness of GW's research by designing and executing activities aimed at securing extramural funding, with additional attention to interdisciplinary programs, and laying the foundation for sustainable research growth.
The Research Enhancement Officer will support the OVPR leadership and service principles of collaboration, service, continuous innovation, diversity and inclusion, and accountability.
Job Description Summary:
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Research, the Research Enhancement Officer at GW plays a pivotal role in advancing university-wide research endeavors. This position is responsible for designing, developing and implementing strategies, programs, and initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality, visibility, and impact of research and scholarly activities across the university. The position manages a suite of information technologies and other services to effectively communicate, coordinate and support research development initiatives.
The Research Enhancement Unit works to promote cross-campus research; facilitate collaborations; conduct workshops and training; develop resources to streamline proposal development and to support the goals and initiatives of the research enterprise. The REU supports symposia, program officer visits, and structured programs focused on high-priority opportunities. Additionally, the REU leads internal competitions, such as intramural funding and limited submissions.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develops and tracks Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the REU
  • Develops and Maintains Content for REU Website: including news, events and faculty ("toolkit") resources
  • Funding Opportunities and New Initiatives:
    • Keeps abreast of the national research funding landscape, informs leadership and faculty and helps develop responses
    • Oversees the identification and dissemination of information regarding funding opportunities, new initiative and updates related to federal funding and priorities
    • Facilities internal discussions related to University strategic initiatives
  • Program/Project Planning and Administration:
    • Collaborate with university leadership to develop and execute Research Enhancement strategies aligned with GW's research goals and priorities.
    • Responsible for planning and facilitating intramural grant programs and limited submission opportunities.
  • Outreach and Promotion: Cultivate relationships to market events, curate, and disseminate targeted funding opportunities.
  • Event Coordination: Plan, and maintain a schedule of Research Enhancement events, including promotion and logistics
  • Personnel Management: Responsible for managing a team member and coordinating colleagues (staff and faculty) to drive success by providing guidance, mentorship, and clear direction to align and meet organizational objectives.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 7 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 5 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Combination of education and experience that reflects successful proposal writing and/or proposal review in pursuit of grants, contracts, and/or gifts.
  • Demonstrated capacity to manage people's participation.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire and facilitate diverse coalitions of individuals toward successful completion of a shared goal.
  • Communication skills to address a broad range of stakeholders within and outside of academic environments.
  • An understanding of sponsored program funding.
  • Commitment to advancing and growing engaged scholarship and research impact.
  • Relevant research administration and enhancement experience.
  • Experience working with many types of sponsors including federal, non-profit, industry and international
  • Experience with systems and applications to include online databases (Pivot, Web of Science, SciVal, Dimensions) and workflow solutions (InfoReady Review, SharePoint).
  • Work experience in a university research environment.

Typical Hiring Range
Commensurate with Experience.
