Job Title: Research Engineer

Functional Area: Research and Development (R&D)

Reports to (Title): VP of R&D

Location: Middleton, WI

Description:

The position of Research Engineer entails meticulously executing well thought out experiments to support the development of biomaterials for drug delivery and tissue engineering. The Research Engineer will employ principles of biomedical engineering in the development of bioresorbable wound dressings impregnated with medicinal substances. The breadth of activities includes development of new products, enhancement of existing products, scale-up of fabrication from bench scale to pilot scale and preparing quality documentation in alignment with requirements set forth in 21 CFR 820 and ISO 13485. Attention to detail, keen sense of observation, diligent documentation and focus on safety are the key attributes required to be successful in this role. We are looking to strengthen our R&D team with an individual who is inquisitive, willing to learn, disciplined, independent thinker and solutions oriented.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Work in compliance with company’s standard operating procedures and quality management systems
  • Ensure all safety measures are in place prior to conducting any experiments
  • Design experiments in consultation with the supervisor/project manager, and subsequently plan and execute the experiment without mistakes
  • Record the experiment precisely so that the experiment can be replicated. Record all the observations, data and results accurately, and promptly discuss them with supervisor/project manager
  • Develop or modify test methods, work instructions, device history records and standard operating procedures as needed
  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is calibrated in timely manner
  • Lead the production scale-up from bench scale to pilot scale
  • Conduct design and process risk analyses, and prepare corresponding reports
  • Summarize and present results to the management and technical teams bi-weekly

Minimum qualification and experience:

  • A four-year degree in chemistry, material science, chemical or biomedical engineering
  • Operating knowledge of various materials characterization techniques
  • > 2 years of professional experience of working in a biomedical lab
  • Experience in design verification and validation and process validation is preferred
  • Proficiency in lab procedures such as pipetting, weighing, mixing, preparing solutions and emulsions, coatings, drying, proper chemical storage and handling
  • Practical or theoretical knowledge of various cell-culture based assays, cytotoxicity assays, biocompatibility testing, fluorescent microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-vis spectroscopy
  • Analysis and synthesis of data into informative plots, tables, figures, etc.
  • Basis statistical analysis – average, standard deviation/error, confidence intervals, significance, type I/II errors, outliers identification, hypothesis testing
  • Efficient in Office suite including Word, Excel and Powerpoint
