Job description

All required qualifications must be included in the application materials

Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS in biomedical, electrical, mechanical engineering or similar with at least 1 year of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal 5 years;
  • Proficiency with SOLIDWORKS
  • Experience with the design and/or implementation of novel medical devices in a research setting.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience designing medical devices which support pre-clinical and clinical deep brain stimulation procedures and subsequent data collection
  • Experience working in the translational neurosciences

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
70% Design and Fabrication: Using best practice guidelines in both clinical and preclinical settings, devise, design, and fabricate novel medical devices for use in DBS procedures and subsequent data collection. In consultation with senior researchers, keep detailed records, parts lists, and design schematics to document improvements to devices and methodologies. Continuously improve devices and related methodologies to ensure timely progress on project deliverables. Serve as a technical resource to other NMRC researchers related to these functions. Monitor, record, and coordinate the implementation of devices and methodologies to ensure best practice welfare standards are met and exceeded.
20% Translational Communication: Tie together and eliminate inconsistencies between clinical and pre-clinical labs at the NMRC. Informed by best practice clinical guidelines, insure that devices, apparatus, and the methodology of their implementation are consistent across labs. In concert with senior researchers, improve preclinical devices and methodologies to match those used in a clinical setting and, where applicable, vice versa.
5% Supervision: Direct the work of NMRC undergraduate volunteer engineers to support above functions.
5% Presentation: Present research at conferences, symposia, and colloquia.

The Neuromodulation Research Center is primarily focused on understanding the pathophysiology of movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease and dystonia as well as the mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effect of deep brain stimulation. Much of the work focuses on the ultimate translation of basic laboratory research discoveries into clinical treatment options for affected patients in order to reduce symptoms, minimize side effects and enhance function and quality of life. The laboratory forms key collaborations with other experts in neurology as well as other disciplines such as neurosurgery, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and radiology in addition to the medical industry to expedite and enhance new discoveries and their meaningful translation from “bench to bedside.

Our lab incorporates our dedication to multidisciplinary research. The Research Engineer will support multiple ongoing NIH funded projects with competing and distinct timelines and deliverables. A successful candidate will design and create novel apparatus used in clinical and pre-clinical DBS procedures. The employee will, in concert with senior researchers, continuously improve devices, apparatus, and methods of data collection to support project aims by eliminating inconsistencies in the unique translational research of the NMRC.
