A leader in the environmental sciences, the UW's Cooperative Institute for Climate, Ocean and Ecosystems Studies (CICOES) is a Cooperative Institute between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the University of Washington that fosters collaborative research on a broad range of global and regional topics of concern and interest to the public.
This Research Consultant will work in the Global Tropical Moored Buoy Array (GTMBA) group at the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory at Sand Point in Seattle.
The GTMBA Project deploys deep-sea ocean mooring observing systems for the collection of high quality oceanographic and surface meteorological data for monitoring, forecasting, and understanding of the world's climate. This position will provide the GTMBA Project with technical data processing and code development support for its mission in the global tropical oceans.
The incumbent will participate in research with observational meteorological and oceanographic data, with emphasis on data from the Global Tropical Moored Buoy Array. Laboratory work will involve quality analysis of moored time series data including surface winds, air temperature, relative humidity, currents, rainfall, radiation, surface pressure, water temperature, and conductivity/salinity. The incumbent reports the performance of instrumentation and processing/analysis software to project managers and other team members. The incumbent must be capable of utilizing, developing or modifying in-house analysis software and data archives. In addition to data analysis duties, the position will require significant contribution to the development and maintenance of database applications used by project staff to track instrument inventories and calibration histories, operations and logistics planning, and status of data archives. The incumbent may contribute to the publication of technical memoranda or other publications describing instrument performance. Research results will be prepared for publication in conjunction with the principal investigator or project managers.
The incumbent must be capable of working with limited supervision, have good verbal communication and technical writing skills, describing and documenting their work in team meetings, in-house reports and technical memoranda. The work involves a diverse group of scientists, engineers and technicians, requiring the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
The incumbent may serve on research cruises, participating on the deployment, recovery, and maintenance of instrumented moorings as well as other oceanographic and meteorological instrumentation. Field work may be performed aboard NOAA and UNOLS vessels as well of ships of non-U.S. registry.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Data processing, evaluation, and quality control duties:
• Data processing, analysis, and quality control (QC) of high-resolution, delayed-mode MOORED BUOY DATA.
• Review and maintain metadata requirements.
• Document data processing methods and procedures.
Software code development and maintenance duties:
• Applications design, evaluation, and maintenance for delayed-mode data processing procedures.
• Metadata and instrument database design and implementation.
• Web, console, and automation application development.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's Degree in in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math, Data Analytics, Physical Science, Oceanography, Meteorology, Engineering, or related field.
• One to two years of job-related experience
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Knowledgeable in the area of modern physical measurement techniques and time series data analysis.
• Familiar with the fundamentals of software development.
DESIRED:
• Comfortable working in a heterogenous computing/IT environment comprised of Unix/Linux servers, Linux/MacOSX/MS Windows workstations and portable computers.
• Formal classroom coursework and experience in some programming discipline.
• Practical experience with relational database design and creating database backed web applications.
• Demonstrated skill in various scripting languages such as Python, Perl, Bash, and Matlab.
• Experience using revision control systems such as Git or Subversion.
• Familiarity with software package management systems like Conda, Brew, YUM and NPM.
• At least 3 years experience in scientific data analysis, preferably oceanographic and/or meteorological time series data.
