Job description

We are seeking a Research and Administrative Assistant to support a project titledRendering the prevalence and toll of medical racism understandable to the public and mapping a path forward to heal medicine of its racist history.


The project's objectives are as follows: 1) a review of the literature on contemporary and historical experience on Black birthing people in the Black Atlantic; 2) an examination of successful practices that birth workers have with Black birthing people; 3) dissemination of the research finding to the general public in podcast format as well as traditional academic formats; and 4) development of a narrative non-fiction book that makes visible to the general public the toll of medical racism on Black birthing people and the efforts to transform these practices.


An advisory group will guide the project. The research assistant will be part of a small team led by Dr. Kaytura Felix, a distinguished scholar, who focuses on medical racism and health justice. The project is housed within the Department of Health Policy and Management within the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.


Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Administrative

  • Attends and takes notes during regular advisory group and team meetings.
  • Schedules and organizes online and in-person meetings of advisory group.
  • Assists principal investigator in the identification, recruitment and enrollment of experts to serve on an advisory group for the project.
  • Work with department staff to ensure that expenses related to all research and project activities are covered.
  • Prepares brief reports for funders.
  • Assists in the preparation and submission of IRB applications.
  • Assists with communication and dissemination efforts, including website and newsletter maintenance and development.
  • Collaborates with the principal investigator to establish community-based partnership for research.

Research

  • Conducts literature reviews using online databases and summarizing relevant studies and works of scholarship.
  • Presents and summarizes results in various formats including oral and written reports.
  • Prepares and edits presentations, slides, manuscripts and reports as requested.
  • Assists in the recruitment, screening, and consent of participants according to inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of study materials and documents such as recruitment flyers, consent forms, interview guides, etc..
  • Collaborates with community-based partners to organize the administration of study procedures; handle all related procedures, e.g., participant recruitment, enrollment, scheduling, data forms, and mailings; discussion group schedules.
  • Assists in the modification of discussion group guide as appropriate.
  • Learns and uses programs or technologies relevant to research projects or related tasks.

  • Must have a highly developed understanding of racial equity and structural racism.
  • Must be able to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks.
  • Must have the ability to work well and communicate effectively with others, and execute, consolidate and organize ideas.
  • Must have strong organizational skills, initiative, leadership skills, attention to detail, be able to take direction, and work independently and as part of a team (teams of researchers and with diverse subject populations in particular).
  • Proficiency in the use of computers, including software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing; MS Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, OneDrive.
  • Excellent qualitative research and analytical skills.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data in a social science and public health context.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong, positive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel with overnight stays required as needed.
  • Ability to learn new databases and software applications is required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • Additional related experience may substitute for required education, tothe extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior research or project implementation experience.
  • Experience working in public health or community-based settings.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
