Job description

The Foundation invites candidates for a Report Writer/Data Analyst full-time exempt position.
The North Dakota State University Foundation is a separate 501(c)(3) organization which exists to maximize advocacy and philanthropy to support NDSU. Position Summary:
Create informative and visually compelling reports, perform in-depth data analysis, and harness Power BI for data visualization. Provide full reporting lifecycle support (needs assessment, design, build, test, deploy, support) for the NDSU Foundation. Oversee the delivery of information to meet the organization’s dynamic needs. Perform data analysis using independent judgment and technical expertise.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Report Writing
    • Design, develop, and generate clear, concise, and well-structured reports based on provided data or information using a variety of technologies.
    • Collaborate with subject matter experts and team members to gather and incorporate information into reports.
    • Provide information delivery from the various system applications to end-users, through a variety of reporting systems, ensuring data quality and consistency.
    • Provide support to end-users on reporting applications: answer questions, troubleshoot issues and research solutions.
    • Maintain accurate records of data sources, references, and methodologies used in report creation.
    • Provide recommendations for reporting roadmap to reflect industry direction.
  • Dashboards
    • Develop visually engaging and informative Power BI dashboards to effectively communicate key performance indicators, impact to campus, and organizational goals.
    • Collect and integrate data from various sources, including databases, spreadsheets, and external APIs, to populate dashboards with accurate and up-to-date information.
    • Translate complex data into easy-to-understand visual representations, including charts, graphs, maps, and infographics.
    • Customize dashboards for different teams and stakeholders to address their unique needs and metrics.
    • Ensure the security and privacy of sensitive data within Power BI dashboards, adhering to data protection regulations and best practices.
    • Monitor and optimize the performance of Power BI dashboards to ensure data loads quickly and efficiently.
    • Collaborate with end-users and stakeholders to gather feedback and make necessary revisions and enhancements to dashboards.
  • Data Analysis
    • Interpret and analyze data to create meaningful insights and actionable recommendations.
    • Create data models and perform ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes to prepare data for analysis.
    • Identify trends, patterns, and anomalies in datasets to drive informed decision-making.
    • Stay up to date with non-profit data analysis techniques and tools, constantly seeking process improvement.
  • Customer Service and Support
    • Deliver high quality customer service to end-users and provide training as needed.
    • Consult with end-users to identify opportunities for business process improvements.
    • Offer insights and present findings related to prepared data.
    • Respond to report requests and deliver end-product in a timely fashion.
    • Maintain confidentiality of donors and other sensitive information.
Essential Functions:
  • Set priorities, develop a work schedule, monitor progress towards goals, and track details/data/information/activities.
    • Efficiently operate a personal computer and associated software (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
    • Maintain files accurately, in paper and in software programs
    • Maintain records and prepare reports
    • Handle multiple tasks simultaneously
    • Plan, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with others both internally and externally to achieve the goals of the organization.
    • Interact in an effective, positive, helpful, and appropriate manner with diverse populations, internal staff, University community and the public
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with others to resolve problems and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

  • Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, management information systems, statistics, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of experience working with relational databases and reporting tools
  • Two years of experience in analyzing data, creating reports and publishing results
  • One year of experience using data visualization tools, Power BI, Tableau, or other closely related software.
  • Excellent customer service skills with ability to describe technical topics from a business perspective
  • Effective communications skills when presenting to various stakeholders, including internal staff, Foundation Trustees, and NDSU campus partners
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of data interpretation.
  • Ability to foster collaboration and inspire trust
  • Knowledge of data privacy and security best practices to protect sensitive information
  • Ability to apply technical/functional expertise, manage and improve processes, practice self-development, champion change and innovatio
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of fundraising systems
  • Experience with Power BI
  • Experience with DAX and Power Query
  • Experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience using Salesforce
Physical Demands:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as computer, printer, copy machines. Occasionally positions self to maintain computers and equipment, including under the desks and in the server closet. Frequently moves computer equipment weighing up to 25 pounds across the organization.
