The full-time job duties vary greatly from reviewing building plans and enforcing building codes to educating contractors and offering potential solutions to issues. Someone with a passion for the construction field and helping others, along with prior building experience, will be a great fit with our team.
A DAY IN THE LIFE:
- Conducts on-site inspections, including rental properties, throughout the Township to determine compliance with state and local codes, ordinances, and standards pertaining to the health, safety, and welfare of residents.
- Investigates potential violations, follows established procedures for achieving abatement and compliance where warranted.
- Provides direction to citizens, landlords, tenants and others on housing, zoning, and nuisance regulations.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Must possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. Associates degree preferred.
- Two (2) or more years’ experience in housing inspections, building construction, building inspections, law enforcement, code enforcement, zoning administration, building trades, courtroom proceedings or similar experience.
- Possess a valid State of Michigan Operator’s/Driver’s License.
WHAT SKILLS you NEED:
- Knowledge and comprehension of the township ordinances and of the principles and practices of code enforcement and site inspections.
- Knowledge of the legal system and liability issues as they relate to code enforcement.
- Ability to document, review, analyze and communicate—verbally and in writing—pertinent information regarding code enforcement.
- Ability to read and understand site plans and similar documents in a proficient manner.
- Establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and resourcefulness when dealing with property owners, the public, other professional contacts and municipal officials.
- Mental ability to frequently handle pressures related to meeting deadlines and fulfilling scheduling requirements with frequent disruptions due to people and/or telephone calls.
- Ability to meet deadlines, adjust to shifting priorities, draft letters, run reports and gather information in a timely manner.
- Technical skills to utilize Microsoft Office programs, email, and BS&A software.
