Jackson & MacNichol is a family firm based in Maine that has been around for more than thirty years, with a passion for guiding people through the legal wilderness. This position is with our VA Department, which is focused on fighting to get justice for those who fought for us.
What is the job?
Our VA Department assists veterans in getting service-connected disability benefits for medical issues incurred in or due to service. VA hearing attorneys handle fifteen hearings before the Board of Veterans Appeals a month, including reviewing medical and service records to prepare the case, preparing the client to testify, requesting any needed medical evaluations or records, and legal research and writing of hearing and post-hearing briefs, motions, and writs. Applicants must be organized and able to prioritize and re-prioritize as needed.
VA hearing attorneys are part of larger attorney and case manager teams that meet weekly. Each VA hearing attorney is paired with a case manager from their team. Your case manager is your partner, not your assistant. VA hearing attorneys are expected to review their case manager’s outgoing mail, answer questions, speak to clients that will not speak to the case manager, and otherwise be available to their case manager. Likewise, many of our experienced case managers are a helpful resource for their attorneys. VA hearing attorneys are directly supervised by their team’s VA Supervising Attorney.

What are the qualifications for the job?
Current accreditation with the VA and experience with veterans disability law are preferred, but not required. Being admitted to and in good standing with the bar of an American state or territory is required. Because the job is fully remote and all hearings are virtual, strong computer skills are a must. Applicants must also possess strong legal research and writings skills and must work well in a team environment.
