Project Title:
Urban and Community Planner, National Park Service RTCA Team
Special Focus on Latino Communities in the Midwest Region
Project Type:
Fellowship: Planning, Design and Research on a National Park Service RTCA Team
Duration:
52 weeks (12 months) - Start date January 8, 2024
Location:
Remote – Supervisor will be in Omaha, Nebraska
Housing:
Must be secured by the intern/fellow.
Project Background:
Intern will be working on a diverse team of National Park Service Planners and Landscape Architects to improve access to nature and recreation for all types of communities. These communities will be in Urban areas, Rural areas and working with Indigenous Tribes across the Midwest. A special emphasis will be marketing and developing projects working in Latino Communities. The Intern will travel to project areas and work directly with Latino Communities. The Intern will develop recreation solutions including: Trails, Alternative Transportation, New Park Areas, River and Lake Access. Intern will be exposed to working with internal and external National Park Service Programs. Intern will work closely with marketing experts to communicate and develop projects in Latino Communities. Intern can produce maps and drawings of conceptual solutions, with National Park Service professionals, and the local communities.
Project Duties:
25% Marketing and Project Development: Latino Communities
25% Planning and Conceptual Design: Develops on-the-ground Solutions
25% Natural Resource and Recreation Research related to New Projects in Latino Communities
25% Assisting Full Time Community Planners on National Park Service Projects
Fellows will work and communicate with a Hispanic Access Program Associate during their fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in scheduled conference calls, webinars, and meetings conducted throughout their term. Fellows will capture photos and/or videos for reporting purposes and submit 3-5 blog posts highlighting their experience and development.

Minimum Qualifications:
Age restriction not applicable to the general application, but is applicable in qualifying for the DHA: Age under 30 y.o. (or up to 35 for veterans).
Course work or Experience in:
  • Urban Planning
  • Community Organizing and Community Planning
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Transportation Planning
  • High Graphic and Drawing Skills – GIS
  • Natural Resource Planning
  • Fluent in English and Spanish
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
  • US citizenship or permanent residency. Interns must undergo a government background check if selected.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is mostly remote in a home office
  • Work trips to Community projects in Midwest (paid for by Fellowship): Includes Urban areas, and, remote Nature Resource Areas
  • Work trips to Regional and National Team Meetings
Stipend + Benefits:
  • A biweekly stipend of $15/hr based on a 40-hour workweek
  • $700 monthly housing stipend
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Funds available to support professional development opportunities that align with role and goals (training, conference, etc.)
  • Direct Hire Authority/Public Land Corp Eligibility – after completing 960 hours, DHA/PLC status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for certain federal positions.
