Job Description

Global Science & Technology, Inc (GST), a growing scientific and high technology company, is seeking a Remote Sensing Scientist - Hyperspectral Spectrometry to support the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) Sensor Data Record (SDR) Algorithm Calibration and Validation Science Team (ACVST) led by NOAA/NESDIS/STAR.

This position is located in College Park, MD, but is temporarily approved for telework due to Covid-19. A hybrid model of onsite and telework each week will likely be put in place in the coming months.

Position Summary:

GST seeks a highly motivated candidate for a position to support the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) Sensor Data Record (SDR) Algorithm Calibration and Validation Science Team (ACVST) led by NOAA/NESDIS/STAR.

The incumbent will develop tools and perform analysis for the calibration and validation of hyperspectral IR Sounding instruments, such as CrIS and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). The CrIS sensor is a Fourier Transform Spectrometer currently flying on-board the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP) and NOAA-20 spacecraft, and planned for the JPSS-2, -3 and -4 satellites. The CrIS SDR ACVST has the responsibility of the science algorithms for transforming the CrIS raw data records (RDR) into high quality geolocated and calibrated radiance product called the SDR. This position involves the participation in pre-launch and post-launch calibration and validation activities of CrIS observations.

Primary Duties:

• Develop, improve and implement methodologies for the radiometric, spectral, and geometric calibration and validation of hyperspectral sounding observations.
• Develop, test and evaluate the different components of the operational CrIS SDR calibration algorithm.
• Support radiometric, spectral, and geometric calibration and validation of CrIS observations
• Monitor CrIS performance
• Disseminate analysis results to calibration specialists, higher level product developers, instrument vendors, instrument operators, project managers, international partners, and other appropriate stakeholders.
• Support JPSS Pre-launch, Post-launch activities, and the JPSS-2 Beta and Provisional Maturity Reviews.
• Support anomaly detection, characterization, and resolution.
• Investigate, monitor and derive solutions for potential anomalies related to CrIS instruments.
• Investigate root causes of anomalies.
• Work with the ACVST team to archive the history of performance and quality
• Support IR sounder activities
• Publishing research results in peer-reviewed journals.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

  • A Master's degree in Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Remote Sensing, Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing or a related physical science.
  • Broad knowledge of physical basis of remote sensing.
  • Experience on following programming languages: Python, C/C++, Fortran 90/95, Matlab, IDL, Shell scripting.
  • Experience with analyzing satellite data. Knowledge and experience with atmospheric sounding products are a plus.

Selected applicants will be subject to a government background investigation.

GST offers competitive salaries; vacation, sick, and holiday leave; major medical, dental, life, long-term and short-term disability insurance; 401K retirement plan; tuition assistance; and opportunities for employee career growth and development.
