High Performance Computing (HPC) Lead Engineer - Linux Systems

GavinHeath is partnering with a client in Denver, CO looking to add a High Performance Computing (HPC) Administrator - Linux Systems to their team. Our client is seeking a highly skilled and motivated HPC Lead Engineer to guide technical strategy, development, operational management, and end-user support of an institutional High-Performance Compute (HPC) cluster and service. This person will supports a user community in all aspects of High Performance Computing hardware, techniques and software for biomedical research, including managing data and analysis interfaces between the computing cluster and the laboratory instruments. They will apply a mix of programming languages and techniques to integrate research study databases with analysis programs, popular research tools, and public databases.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical leadership for system architecture, configuration, enhancements, and implementations for new and existing research systems.
  • Manages all aspects of high-Performance Computing infrastructure, including OS and software installations and upgrades, system maintenance, performance monitoring and optimization, end-user access, and security, to support the research community's computational needs effectively.
  • Administers research data storage system, overseeing data provisioning, security, and accessibility to ensure efficient and secure data management for research initiatives.
  • Manages research data backup systems, ensuring the reliable and secure backup, retention, and recovery of critical research data.
  • Implements and maintains technical security controls and HIPAA compliance measures, encompassing encryption, access controls, audit logging, vulnerability assessments, and incident response procedures to safeguard healthcare data.
  • Fosters a supportive work environment and maintains open, productive interactions among team members and across the organization.
  • Develops and maintains technical documentation and diagrams for research computing and data storage systems, ensuring a comprehensive resource for effective system management and operation.
  • Recommends and develops policy/procedure and standards relating to research infrastructure and services.
  • Provides end-user documentation and support ensuring optimal performance, troubleshooting issues, and facilitating efficient utilization of computational resources.
  • Provides quality assurance by testing system operation and unit functions including systems recoverability and validation of backup and restores.
  • Coordinates with IST staff to problem solve, develop solutions, inform, train, and support new and modified systems.
  • Coordinates with vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Periodic off-hours support for system maintenance activities.
Qualifications:
  • Must reside in one of the states mentioned at the top of this job description.
  • Requires demonstrated experience using and administering Linux/Unix systems (RHEL preferred). 
  • Must have experience using HPC and/or grid computing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of PBS or LSF scheduling systems (LSF preferred). 
  • Strong scripting and programming experience in at least three of the following: R, Python, Perl, C/C++/C#, MATLAB, Java, SQL, and MPI.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate excellent project management and communication skills with a strong commitment to customer service.
  • Ability to multitask and communicate effectively with a diverse set of collaborators, including faculty, scientists, developers, bioinformaticians, managers and IST personnel.
  • Understands the research process and comfortable working in a dynamic environment, with flexibility to meet evolving requirements with minimal supervision.
  • Working knowledge of tools such as MATLAB, Galaxy, Bioconductor, NCBI/GoldenPath/Ensemble repositories, or next-generation sequencing pipelines a plus.
  • Prior experience supporting informatics systems in biomedical or basic science research strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or in a related area, required. Master's Degree preferred.
