Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose
Responsible for receiving and transmitting routine and emergency telephone and radio messages. Viewing camera surveillance systems and identifying issues important to the department's mission.
Essential Functions
  1. Answers emergency telephone requests for police, fire and medical emergencies.
  2. Dispatches police, required equipment, or arranges for response from other departments, as appropriate.
  3. Maintains radio communication with University police units and for maintaining logs of the activities of each officer.
  4. Maintains various departmental files including criminal records and confidential files.
  5. Assists in training new dispatchers.
  6. Performs a variety of clerical and typing work.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, or G.E.D.
  • One (1) month of experience working in an office setting.
  • Ability to type 40 words per minute.
  • Must pass a complete police background investigation.

Preferred Qualifications
Skills/Knowledge and Expertise:
  • Basic computer skills in Windows operating system, Microsoft Word and MS Excel.
  • Ability to retain and read maps street, building, and compass directions.
  • Ability to research and gather information from telephone interviews.
  • Effectively communicate over telephone and radio equipment.
  • Ability to condense lengthy information into coherent communication.
  • Knowledge in the use of surveillance cameras, radios and other communication systems and equipment.
  • Ability to think and act quickly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.
  • Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
  • Successful completion of a POST Basic Dispatch Certificate. Applicants hired without this certificate will be required to complete certificate within one (1) year of hire.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Physical Requirements

Must successfully complete a background investigation, which shall include a background screening, pre-employment physical, and a psychological screening.
Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Work performed on a 24/7 operation, weekends and nights.
Valid driver's license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University's fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
Hiring Range
$24.00 - $26.00 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
