Job description

Shift: Registry, Nights, Weekend as needed

Rhythm interpretation skills required

Reporting to the Clinical Director of Cardiac Surveillance Unit and under the general supervision of the team facilitator and CSU leadership team, the Telemetry Technician assists the professional staff by monitoring, reporting, and documenting patient's cardiac rate and rhythm. Properly identifies patients receiving telemetry monitoring and provides patient instruction and safe patient interactions.

1. Continually monitors and analyzes patients' cardiac rate and rhythm, with accurate interpretation of ECG (electrocardiographic) tracing, posting tracings as changes occur and at designated times.

2. Documents ECG measurements, (PR, QRS intervals), rates and rhythms on computerized documentation and creates the Medical Record document.

3. Communicates to healthcare team the patient's basic ECG rhythm, immediately notifies the healthcare team of life-threatening dysrhythmias.

4. Performs electrocardiograms as requested, using correct lead placement and inputing data into computer. Assists with ECG completion on off shifts and with pediatric and infant patients under the supervision of those departments.

5. Updates each patient's telemetry history, to enhance the capabilities of our monitoring equipment which then can accurately identify rhythms. Reviews the 72 hour history of patient information at intervals, analyzes ST segment changes and alerts caregivers to significant events.

6. Initiates and discontinues patients for telemetry monitoring. Assesses appropriateness of monitoring by evaluating stability of rhythm, duration of monitoring and knowledge of patient condition per healthcare team. Logs data and requests for continuation/ discontinuation of telemetry in the patient's medical record.

7. Enters daily telemetry charges. Maintains accurate electronic log of all patients on telemetry.

8. Serves as preceptor/ resource to orientees' students learning interpretation of dysrhythmias and function of monitoring equipment.

9. Assumes responsibility for identifying areas in need of improvement including work processes and purchased monitoring equipment. Performs audits regarding emergency notification procedure for telemetry. Inventories telemetry equipment daily, assists with restocking, and relays the need for additional supplies.

10. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies and procedures.

Qualifications

1. The level of knowledge normally obtained through the completion of four years of high school. Participation in the studies of the field of Applied Science Cardiology or completion of paramedic program preferred.

2. C.P.R. Basic Rescue Certification. Completion of basic ECG interpretation course, with strong arrhythmia recognition skills required.

3. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology.

4. The organizational skills necessary to simultaneously monitor the heart rate and rhythm of multiple patients and the ability to prioritize and complete required work during the shift schedules.

5. The ability to perform efficiently in stressful situations and function well in a fast paced environment.

6. The ability to pay close attention to detail and maintain a high level of accuracy.

7. The computer skills necessary to retrieve and analyze data and complete telemetry documentation on line.

8. The verbal communication skills necessary to present information in a clear concise manner.
