JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse serves as a leader of the healthcare team at UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper by establishing an authentic personalized relationship with the patient and their chosen support system, collaborating with physicians and other team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate an individualized plan of care that promotes optimal health. The Registered Nurse utilizes best scientific evidence and compassion to assist the patient in navigating their health journey. The Registered Nurse accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with the current policies and procedures.

Patient Care: Acts with patient advocacy when implementing the interdisciplinary plan of care. 

  • Collaborates with healthcare team to educate patient and their support system.  
  • Analyzes, modifies, and implements strategies to progress the patient through their plan of care.  
  • Ensures completion of nursing interventions, medical orders, and other related therapies.  
  • Prioritizes job duties according to patients' needs and changing acuity levels. 

Communication: Consistently utilizes appropriate communication tools when communicating within the interdisciplinary team and when handing off patient care.  

  • Communicates individualized plan of care to the patient and his/her chosen support system.  
  • Uses communication tools such as Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation, and Question (SBARQ) to communicate more effectively.  
  • Documents appropriate information in a timely manner. 

Teamwork: Develops and maintains positive relationships with team members/internal customers to provide efficient treatment of patients. 

  • Develops team members through mentoring, precepting, orientation, and providing feedback.  
  • Resolves conflicts independently, as appropriate.  
  • Accepts responsibility for actions and responds positively upon feedback from others. 

Medical Knowledge: Demonstrates medical skills to provide required patient care. 

  • Operates various equipment including portable cardiac monitors, bedside commodes, etc.  
  • Provides routine nursing care such as starting IVs, performing dressing changes, etc. for multiple patients in a timely manner.  
  • Assists in critical situations including administering CPR. 
  • Administers and evaluates medication therapies, performs patient transfers, and transports patients via wheelchair, hospital bed, or stretcher to other departments. 

The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing required. 4 Year/Bachelor's Degree preferred.

Experience: 1 year of relevant experience preferred. Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.

Licensure: Current RN licensure in applicable state required. CPI certification within three months of hire required for Behavioral Health, Emergency Department, and Central Staffing and Scheduling Office (CSSO). If your RN nursing license has been inactive, retired or lapsed for five years or more and you have not been licensed in another state during the last five years, successful completion of a Board approved refresher course is required prior to reactivating or reinstating your license. In order to be considered for current licensure status, you must apply for reinstatement within one year of completing the refresher course.

Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Ability to perform basic nursing skills on groups of patients and ability to assume charge responsibility. Ability to multitask and prioritize quickly. Ability to administer medication utilizing the five rights. Ability to communicate verbally and in written form. Basic computer knowledge. Ability to safely and effectively care for all patient populations which present to the department.

Weekend Only Work (WOW) Requirements/Guidelines

Weekend Only Work (WOW) program is a commitment. The commitment to the program is for at least six months. Requirements/guidelines are listed below.

Weekend shifts include

For shifts starting prior to 1pm (i.e. 7am, 9am, 11am)- shifts would be Saturday, Sunday

For shifts starting after 1pm (i.e. 1pm, 3pm, 6pm, 7pm)- shifts would be Sunday, Friday, Saturday

Weekend shift must be a 12 hour shift unless an 8 hr shift (Max 2 per calendar year) has been pre-approved by scheduler/manager. Employee is required to find coverage for the 4 hour period of time.

Additional shift during the week is determined by unit needs

Compensation includes:

Base pay (based on years of experience) + Shift Differentials for all shifts

Weekend shifts (24 hours max) will be paid with additional $10 WOW differential based on a pay week. Pay week starts on Sunday at 0001 and ends Saturday at 2359. Which means to qualify for WOW differential one must work 2 weekend shifts in a pay week.

PDO will be paid at base pay (same as hospital policy for all employees)

Eligible for all other differentials, incentive pay, etc. the same as any non-exempt employee (i.e. preceptor, charge, overtime, holiday pay)

Employee benefits are based on employment status.

WOW differential does not apply to any type of orientation and/or meeting/training

WOW differential is not transferable to another employee who may work weekend time in approved trades.

There is a maximum of four weekends off per calendar year. This may be taken as Friday/Saturday, Saturday/Sunday combos as defined above or may be taken per pay week (as in the first Sunday and the following Saturday). For the 4 weekends off, the combo can be Saturday/Sunday (which is 2 different pay weeks) and one will be eligible for WOW pay for the weekend shift that one works but not the weekend shift requested off.

separate weekends shifts do not qualify

Holiday expectations are the same as the remainder of the department/hospital. The fulfillment of holiday time overrides the WOW program. During the holiday times, one will be eligible for WOW pay for the weekend shift worked only.

Removal from the program will occur if one is placed on probationary status or if absent more than 3 weekend shifts

Removal may occur at the discretion of the department manager, nursing administration and/or Human Resources

If removed from the program, one will be eligible to reapply in six months and will be placed in available weekend rotation.

WOW Request Form must be filled out for an 8hr shift or weekend off request.

Physical Demand Code: 20A, Nursing

Work Function/Activity: Medium to Heavy Physical Demand

The job requires constant standing, frequently walking, and bending/stooping. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull 100 lbs. For any weight over 35 lbs., use Safe Handling Equipment.
