Position Description
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager and in collaboration with the team physicians and Practice Manager, the Registered Nurse for the Internal Medicine areas supports the delivery of care including health maintenance, episodic and chronic care to the adolescent, adult, and elder population of the University Community according to department guidelines, policies and procedures. The Internal Medicine Registered Nurse also assists and provides coverage and support to the Acute Treatment Area (ATA) as needed.
NURSING ASSESSMENT:

  • Interviews patients for assessment of current problem/s, medications and allergies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and competence in ability to triage patient visits and/or calls; prioritize issues and make appropriate referrals.
  • Reviews medical record for pertinent previous and current medical information.
  • Documents nursing assessment of current problem and pertinent history.

TREATMENT PLAN OF CARE:

  • Establishes and documents individualized patient treatment regimen.
  • Demonstrates collaboration with patient, family, multidisciplinary team and community providers to provide care needs.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work effectively and communicate frequently with other members of the patient care team.

IMPLEMENTATION:

  • Adheres to nursing and department standards, policies, procedures and protocols.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in performing nursing procedures according to guidelines, policy and procedure.
  • Performs telephone triage within the scope of nursing practice.
  • Utilizes triage skills to facilitate patient access to primary care provider through visits or telephone consults.
  • Administers medications according to policy and procedure.
  • Performs prescription refills according to policy and procedure.
  • In collaboration with ordering provider performs follow-up of lab and diagnostic studies.
  • Identifies acute versus emergency situations and responds to emergencies according to policy.
  • Participates in the monitoring of patients in the Coumadin Program.
  • Maintains medical and emergency equipment and supplies.
  • Facilitates and assists in the coordination of patient referrals.
  • Documents all care provided in a concise and complete manner.
  • Communicates in writing and/or verbally patient’s response to treatment.
  • Provides and documents patient and family education related to disease, medication and treatment regimes.
  • Maintains pharmaceuticals in collaboration with other members of the health care team.
  • Maintains a smooth, organized flow of the clinic.
  • Demonstrates accountability for problem resolution.
  • Completes work assignment in given time.

EVALUATION:

  • Provides oral and written communication of patient’s response to treatment plan.
  • Monitors patient satisfaction and responds accordingly.
  • Demonstrates improvements in personal performance and clinic operations based upon input from patient, family, team and supervisor.

Basic Qualifications

  • Graduate of accredited nursing program
  • Minimum of 1 years relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills
  • Knowledge of and previous experience working with an electronic medical record
  • Ability to organize tasks, problem solve, and respond in times of multiple demands and urgent situations

Certificates and Licenses

  • Registered Nurse license in Massachusetts

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting (approximately 20 to 30 pounds), bending, and other physical exertion
  • Ability to stand for extended periods

Working Conditions
All Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) staff and staff affiliates are considered Health Care Workers and as a condition of employment must provide documentation of the following:

  • Letter of good health from your personal health care provider.
  • TB skin test (within past 3 months) or, if known skin test positive, documentation of previous chest x-ray, information about any past treatment.
  • Documentation of immunity (positive antibody titers) for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Proof of appropriate past immunization for Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Varicella.
  • Hepatitis B vaccine series – required for staff with possible exposure to blood or blood borne pathogens.
  • A current Flu vaccine (this season) and Covid vaccines to include the Primary series and Bivalent Booster.

The required medical documentation/medical clearances can often be obtained by contacting your Pediatrician, PCP, medical provider. Titers, TB Skin testing can be performed by appointment at Occupational Health facilities.

  • Cooperates and complies with goals/projects of clinic and department.
  • Utilizes time productively.
  • Maintains professional conduct and appearance.
  • Demonstrates essential knowledge and skills for identifying and treating anaphylaxis in the clinical setting.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to perform peak flow monitoring.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to identify and respond to life threatening arrhythmias.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill in performing nebulizer treatments.
  • Demonstrates skills necessary to perform an EKG.

AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

  • Administers medications according to patient age and with the knowledge of action, mode of administration, side effects, contraindications and departmental policies.
  • Determines pregnancy status in the adolescent and adult female patient prior to administration of inoculations.
  • Provides age specific patient education regarding routine health maintenance and prevention issues i.e. adult and geriatric patient – osteoporosis, adolescent – contraception.
  • Explains procedures to the adolescent patient using correct terminology and includes parents and family as necessary.
  • Encourages questions from the adolescent patient that address possible fears.
  • Encourages and supports self-care in the adult patient to maintain function and independence.
  • Recognizes age related changes in the elderly patient in sensory and perceptual abilities and adjusts communication style to meet individual elder needs.
  • Maintains a safe environment for the elderly patient based upon physical and psychological function.

COMPLIANCE:

  • Adheres to the expectations and professional responsibilities of the department.
  • Employs the standards, practices, and procedures of the department.
  • Completes and complies with HUHS training requirements including HIPAA Privacy and Security.
  • Reports non-compliance incidents to the supervisor, manager, and/or Compliance Officer.

Work Format Details
This position is based primarily on-campus, in Massachusetts. This may include in-person during emergency situations (if applicable). Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
