Responsibilities
Provides family centered healthcare utilizing a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to deliver state of the art care to all patients; assists the Nurse Manager in the coordination of Adult PICC/Sedation Services to include maintenance of the database of PICC line insertions and specialty patients, development of policies and procedures, and educational training for all PICC team members and other staff involved in the care of these patients; utilizes technically advanced monitoring equipment to place PICC/Midline catheters; participates in evaluation of new products; maintains clinical competencies to effectively serve as the designated Adult PICC Coordinator; maintain appropriate supplies for procedural needs; inspects sterile items for contamination before opening; utilizes all types of CVLs including PICC/Midlines; sets standards of practice and patient care for selected patient populations; identifies learning needs of in-house and referral hospital healthcare personnel; formulates implements and evaluate protocols and plans of care for specialty groups of patients; interprets critical lab values and reports to appropriate physician; participates in, plans, and presents formal educational activities including in-services, workshops and conferences; promotes utilization of referral and consultation services provided at USA Medical Center by: serving as a resource person to regional referral hospitals, providing educational programs based on requests and assessed needs, identifying resources for providing care, and maintaining communication and a working relationship with varied healthcare providers; coordinates care of selected patient populations; administers and monitors conscious/deep sedation; coordinates PICC Line placement schedule; formulates quarterly PICC Line reports, maintains annual recertification for PICC Line team members; plans orientation programs for new members; coordinates, maintains and educates staff who are participants of the critical care transport team; coordinates annual competencies for PICC program and stays abreast with latest PICC line trends; provides annual in-services for physicians relating to aspects of PICC line management; available in hospital within (30) minutes of call; utilizes the nursing process to: assess the patient, plan individualized care, identify expected outcomes, implement and evaluate nursing interventions for patients and families, coordinate the care of a specialty group of patients with all necessary services, provide direct patient care according to unit specific competencies; performs therapeutic procedures and assists with diagnostic procedures required for the care of the patient; administers medications including controlled substances by all routes; administers blood and blood products; responds appropriately to emergency patient situations; starts IVs; performs activities of daily living; performs basic life support and management of arrest situations; requires minimal supervision to safely perform patient care; when performing skilled procedures the RN can state the purpose, rationale, precautions and observations related to that procedure; utilizes proper body mechanics when: moving, positioning and transferring patients without assistance or with assistance when needed for patient safety, moving equipment that is necessary to perform essential functions; provides patient and family education by planning, coordinating and delegating, as appropriate, the educational needs of each patient; ensures education documentation is complete; utilizes a personal computer or terminal to access the Clinical Information System; communicates and uses appropriate customer relation skills with physicians, patients, families and healthcare team in person and via telephone; responds to overhead pages; serves as a facilitator of change; maintains accurate and complete records by completing quarterly reports of PICC and Sedation patient activities, continuing education for selected educational programs presented, and Quality Management summaries of PICC and Sedation activities; maintains accurate and complete patient care documentation; transcribes physician orders; adheres to current infection Control and Safety Standards; demonstrates CPR according to American Heart Association standards; abides by and enforces all compliance requirements and policies and performs these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values; adheres to hospital policies including those related to confidentiality; regular and prompt attendance; ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required; related duties as required.
Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing meeting the minimum standards set by the state of Alabama, licensure with the state of Alabama as a Registered Nurse and one year PICC experience.
Bachelors degree in nursing is preferred.
