TITLE: Preop/Recovery Room Nurse
RESPONSIBLE TO: Pre/Post Supervisor, Director of Nursing
DEFINITION:
Responsible for admission and immediate post-op care of the surgical patient.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Previous Preop and Recovery Room experience or Acute Care experience
Education: Must be a Registered Nurse and hold a license in Oregon
Must have current ACLS Certification
JOB DUTIES:
1. Brings patient back to the Preoperative Area. Prepares patient for surgery by following Anesthesiologist and Surgeon’s Pre-Procedure Orders.
2. Obtains vital signs and confirms patient history. Places IV and administers fluids and medications when ordered.
3. Shaves operative site when indicated.
4. Receives patient from OR. Makes assessment on each patient at admission and discharge and records this information on Recovery Room record.
5. Close observation and monitoring of the post-op patient by taking vital signs, EKG monitoring, oximetry readings and documentation of vital signs on Recovery Room records.
6. Identifies arrhythmias by constant monitoring and interpreting of EKG’s as indicated and provides nursing intervention as per physician’s orders.
7. Administers medications, IV’s and Rx’s and maintains records regarding dispensing of same. Observes patient’s reaction to medications, IV’s and Rx’s and acts appropriately when untoward reactions occur.
8. Performs or assists physician in performance of non-sterile and sterile dressing changes and other procedures.
9. Responsible for assuring patient that he or she is not left alone in Recovery Area.
10. Post-op teaching of patient, if necessary, and discharge of patient.
11. Responsible for making sure patient has follow-up appointment scheduled before being discharged. Assists staff with post-op telephone calls as needed.
12. Provides immediate respiratory assistance or support in emergency situations, including use of AMBU bag and administration of CPR and venipuncture.
13. Checking, maintaining and knowledge of CRASH cart.
14. Recognizes and utilizes safety precautions and procedures.
15. Remains familiar with equipment and supplies, their location, function and upkeep. Restocks unit with supplies when necessary.
16. Maintains a comfortable, orderly, clean and safe environment for the Recovery Area.
17. If Operating Room Recovery Room Nurse is an LVN, works under the close or immediate supervision of the Registered Nurse in charge of Recovery.
RECOVERY ROOM NURSE OBSERVATION OF PATIENTS
The Recovery Room Nurse will observe the recovering patient’s face frequently from either a standing position near the patient or from the nurse station charting area.
