Registered Nurse - Pediatric Hematology/Oncology

The role of the Pediatric Hematology RN will focus on care of pediatric patients with non-malignant hematology disorders in the outpatient setting. The pediatric non-malignant hematology team at Mayo Clinic consists of MDs, APPs, RNs, pharmacists, and social workers. The hematology RN is responsible for implementing treatment plans, providing education, triaging phone calls, monitoring lab results, and facilitating communication across settings and interprofessional roles. Patients in this specialty present with a variety of diagnoses including (but not limited to) sickle cell disease, thalassemia, immune thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, iron deficiency, neutropenia, vascular malformations, and coagulation disorders.

Qualified candidates considered for this position will also intermittently assist the lab/procedural practice for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology by performing central line draws, accessing ports, and performing central line site care.

The Registered Nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects. A subset of employees may be required to drive their personal vehicle as a part of the responsibility of their role.

Graduate of a nursing program, as recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA, at least one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.

One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is preferred.

No New Grads. BSN preferred. A minimum of 2 years pediatric nursing experience preferred, but new graduates with past experience in pediatrics may be considered. Knowledge of pediatric population characteristics and desired outcomes. Candidates must be able to work independently alongside a team of physicians within the Peds specialty. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Experience working in a team environment. Computer skills required, prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred. Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting. Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

Current RN license by applicable state requirements. Arizona and Florida - Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency. Midwest - Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Positions that are not on campus may not require current Basic Life Support (BLS) competency as determined by the work area.
