The Registered Nurse – NICU cares for newborn babies who are delivered pre-term or at-term newborns who experience complications at the time of birth. The Registered Nurse – NICU provides intensive around-the-clock care, including both medical needs and basic daily care activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care of the neonatal patient and coordinates with healthcare team members
- Cares for infants transitioning to extrauterine life
- Provides age and culturally appropriate care to patient
- Provides nutritional assessment & specialized feedings
- Changes dressings, inserts catheters, starts IVs
- Provides arterial & intravenous therapy
- Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, such as incubators and ventilators
- Assists NICU Physician during examination, treatment and procedures, which can include lifesaving measures
- Participates in discharge planning
- Assesses signs and symptoms indicating changes in patient’s condition, documents changes and informs physician/charge nurse
- Collects, analyzes, and interprets data and information from health care members and documents actual and/or potential nursing diagnoses
- Identifies and prioritizes actions based upon patient care requirements
- Performs interventions according to identified priorities, and the hospital policies and patient care outcome standard
- Provides a safe, comfortable and therapeutic patient/family environment
- Initiates and evaluates family education
- Documents and revises the plan of care according to evaluation, changes in medical plan of care, and effective/ineffective nursing interventions
- Participates in activities to facilitate good interpersonal communications with facility • Performs other duties as assigned/necessary
Minimum Requirements:
- Current Registered Nurse license for the state in which the nurse practices
- One year NICU experience required
- NRP card per contract requirement
- Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice
- Participation and completion of Maxim's Competency program when applicable
- Current CPR if applicable
- TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable
- Current Health certificate (per contract or state regulation)
- Must meet all federal, state and local requirements
- Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site
- Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements
- Ability to effectively elicit/provide information to and from appropriate individuals (including, but not limited to, supervisors, co-workers, clients) via strong communication skills; proficiency in the English language is required
