Position Summary:
Provide direct patient care to oncology and hematology patients in the infusion setting including, but not limited to, the initial nursing evaluation, development and ongoing implementation of care plan, education and counseling of patients and families. The position requires excellent communication skills and collaboration with physicians, co-workers and all internal & external departments and agencies involved to optimize patient care.

Responsibilities:
- Maintain patient flow by escorting patients from the waiting area to the examination room. Assist with the ongoing management of patient flow by prioritizing based on patients needs and ensuring rooms are efficiently utilized, thereby minimizing patient wait time.
- Prepare patients for their visit, examination, procedure, and/or treatment in accordance with established procedures. Obtain vital signs per protocol. Document the reason for the visit based on information received from the patient.
- Assess patient acuity and inform physician and/or licensed provider of urgent or emergent patient needs.
- Educate patients in regard to care and prevention of illness and injury within the scope of standards of care of nursing practice.
- Document patient information in the electronic medical record as appropriate.
- Assist physicians and licensed providers with medical and surgical procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Assist in urgent and emergent medical situations, including obtaining and operating medical equipment in accordance with established procedures.
- Assist in the collection, labeling and processing of specimens. Perform point of care testing as indicated.
- Assist physicians and licensed providers with patient care support activities related to referrals, laboratory work, diagnostic testing, patient education, etc.
- Under the direction of a physician and licensed provider, provide assistance by returning patient telephone calls, related to prescription refills, laboratory results, referrals, etc. Additionally, provide assistance with placing telephone calls to pharmacies to request prescription refills, as specifically ordered by a provider or according to established protocols.
- Maintain a high quality patient care environment by cleaning, preparing, and stocking all examination rooms and treatment areas inaccordance with established standards. Assist in the care, cleaning, sterilization, and maintenance of medical equipment and instruments. This includes monitoring relevant expiration dates and established maintenance schedules. May provide assistance in maintaining medical supply inventories, including monitoring relevant expiration dates.
- In accordance with Practice protocols, ensure that medical record have been reviewed for visit screenings, quality metrics, and other needed information to be used by the physician or licensed provider during the patient visit. Obtain and sort laboratory and diagnostic test results in accordance with Practice protocols.
- As requested, assist the Practice Management Team and /or physicians with certain coordination functions/activities that allow for the efficient deployment and utilization of Registered Nurses throughout the Practices. Also, assist with the on-the-job training and support for newly hired Registered Nurses as well as with ongoing leadership training.
- Understand, respect and demonstrate patient confidentiality in all endeavors. Understand the legal ramifications of violating any component of patient confidentiality. Understand and demonstrate the protocol and related procedures for the release of patient information.
- Under the orders of a physician or licensed provider, administer oral or injectable medications.
- Under the orders of a physician or licensed provider, administer treatments; provide care for or dress wounds; provide care related to tubes or drains; remove sutures; and provide patient education or counseling.
- Participates in continuing education to maintain current nursing standards for patient care and education, within skill and scope of practice as required by regulations of the Commonwealth.
- Perform receptionist, clerical and other functions as needed to support the efficient operation of the Practice.

- Understand, respect and demonstrate compliance with the parameters of the Registered Nurse license and function within the framework specified by the nursing statutes and regulations of the Commonwealth. Specifically prohibited activities include (but are not limited to):
- Making independent medical decisions regarding patients either in person or via the telephone.
- Independently prescribing medication refills.
- Independently providing medical samples.
- Independently referring patients for other services or to other physicians.

Education/Experience/Licenses/Technical/Other:
- Education: Must be a graduate of an approved school of nursing with current Massachusetts license and current BLS certification.
- Experience: Current or past Certification in Oncology Nursing (OCN, AOCN, CPON) or currently working towards acquiring OCN certification strongly preferred. Five years of infusion RN experience in a medical oncology and hematology department required. Outpatient experience preferred. Proficient IV skills required.
- Certification/Licensure: Licensed in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a Registered. Current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Providers completion.
