NURSING SUMMARY/ PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Urology Aultman Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional nurse whose main responsibility will be as Referral Management Specialist, with the secondary role of patient care.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred.
  • Current, active licensure as a Registered Nurse through the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • Maintain current, active BLS certification through the American Heart Association.
  • Certification preferred for RNs meeting applicable certification eligibility requirements.
  • Membership in professional nursing organization preferred.

  • Proficient computer skills to complete tasks as required.
  • Must be organized, able to effectively prioritize tasks and exhibit appropriate time management skills.
  • Must be detail oriented while focusing on safe practices and quality care.
  • Demonstrates effective communication.

UROLOGY SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS -colleague must be able to perform the essential functions of this position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Manage/triage incoming referrals in a timely and professional manner.
  • Receive phone calls and messages and return calls to patients and/or family in a timely manner.
  • Triage patients and review with LP as necessary any acute & post op patient issues with LP and schedule acute visits, as necessary.
  • RN is a patient/resident advocate in conjunction with the other members of the healthcare team and fosters patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction.
  • Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice.
  • Check LP's schedules frequently for any add-ons or updates.
  • Review the patient's medical record prior to visit to verify completeness, including having test results available.
  • Room patients in a timely fashion using two patient identifiers.
  • Obtain vital signs, height, weight, and current accurate list of medications and pertinent information needed for the LP to assess the patient. Communicates this in a timely manner.
  • Will perform straight, foley, & suprapubic catheter changes and care.
  • Administer bladder treatments and chemotherapy via catheter.
  • Prepare and administer IM and SQ medications as ordered by LP.
  • May receive verbal and telephone orders from LP.
  • Perform and assist with specimen collection, point of care testing, and venipuncture with a valid LP order.
  • Assist with set up of office procedures, including both clean and sterile techniques.
  • Obtain and transport necessary equipment from CS for daily and/or STAT procedures.
  • Perform or assist office procedures including, but not limited to:

    • prostate biopsies
    • prostate ultrasound
    • cystoscopies
    • cystoscopy with stent removal
    • bladder biopsies
    • bladder fulguration
    • bladder Botox
    • urethral dilation

    • cystoscopy with a guidewire
    • vasectomies
    • nephrostomy tube care
    • urodynamic testing
    • aspiration of hydrocele
    • destruction of penile lesion
    • PNE

  • Perform instrument processing/sterilization as indicated.
  • Work with CS as needed regarding sterilization and equipment malfunctions.
  • Accurately arrange for various hospital procedures and tests to be scheduled. This includes precertification, authorizations, physician orders, communicating with the patient, and adding to the LP's schedule if indicated.
  • Propose prescription refills for approval by LP.
  • Schedule urgent and non-urgent appointments.
  • Accurately completes medical forms and correctly completes and routes billing information to appropriate staff. (Example: FMLA/disability forms etc.)
  • Copy and release medical records according to policy.
  • Document in the medical record accurately and timely.
  • Educate patient/family for ordered testing and medications as indicated.
  • Educate patient/family on performing self-injections or self-catheterization.
  • Notify LP promptly of abnormal lab results, testing results or critical results and review results and orders as necessary.
  • Restock and clean exam rooms after use.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information obtained in the course of performing duties.
  • Medication prior authorizations.
  • Collects specimens as ordered.
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues, and students.
  • Integrates research findings into practice.
  • Responsible for timely review of emails, department communications and applicable learning assignments and completion as applicable.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Meal and break times are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage.
  • Shifts are scheduled or changed due to the staffing needs of the unit/department based upon volume and acuity.
  • Cross training depending upon department needs.

UROLOGY SPECIFIC WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Typically works 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday
  • Must be able to work as a team and independently.
  • Must possess the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Cross training in all clinical areas in the department is required.
  • May require paid overtime before or after normal working hours.
  • Subject to frequent interruptions during performance of duties.
  • Expected to adhere to office policy and procedures.
  • Subject to blood and body fluid exposure.
  • Flexibility to cover department schedule.
  • Staff may be assigned to different locations within the department.
  • Personal transportation for scheduled shift is required.
