Registered Nurse

About This Role:

The individual in this position provides nursing care to patients who present for care daily. In order to accomplish the organizational mission of providing superior healthcare services to the students of KSU, adequate professional staffing is mandated.

Nursing care for clinic outpatients.  Provides professional nursing care in accordance with recognized nursing techniques, procedures, physician's orders, and administrative policies, to outpatients.

This is done by:

a. Assessing patient needs through interviewing, recognizing and interpreting symptoms and conditions in order to determine individual response to treatment program and current medication.  This is done in order to prepare, record, and relay accurate reports on the status of the patient's progress to the treating physician and staff members directly involved in total care of the patient.

b. Administration of medications and treatments as prescribed.

c. Instructing patient regarding self-care techniques and preventive strategies.  This is done by evaluating level of understanding of disease process and /or potential health status, providing information needed and determining the patient's intent for compliance with the treatment routine.  Written and verbal instructions maybe given.  This is done in order to promote the highest level of physical, mental well-being possible.

d. Formulating nursing diagnoses in order to outline a nursing care plan specific to the patient's needs. This is to insure continuity of medical, physical, and emotional care during the treatment process.

Record keeping.  Documents nursing history, clinical data, doctor's orders, patient response to treatment and/or understanding of instructions given, and other objective findings in order to furnish written evidence of everything done for the patient while being treated by the healthcare team.  This is done to ensure continuity of care, to communicate with other professionals, to provide legal record and to furnish information for review, study, and evaluation in an audit.

Professional updating.  Attends continuing education offerings, continually reviewing current professional literature/journals.  This is done to ensure that staff is prepared with the most current health care information available and to improve the quality of nursing care to patients.

Quality Management. Participates in achievement of organizational goals of excellence of service through the principles of quality management by involvement in quality management studies, peer reviews, and displays positive customer relations skills in order to ensure appropriate interaction with patients and staff.

Productive, independent work, team cooperation.  Works independently and cooperatively with all healthcare team members in order to effectively carry out responsibilities of the RN by utilizing good communication skills with patients and staff, maintaining confidentiality, adhering to the dress code, maintaining work areas by restocking and cleaning frequently, following organizational chart for problem resolution and completing assignments as made by the supervisor. Assignment may include rotation to any area of Lafene assigned by supervisor in which the RN has received orientation and for which RN coverage is appropriate.  Functions in leadership role by working as charge clinic coordinator assuring appropriate and efficient patient flow through coordination of clinical and support staff in a cooperative effort.

What You'll Need to Succeed:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Must be licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Kansas.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing.
• 2-3 years experience in performing health assessments.
• 2-3 years experience in executing organizational policy, goals or objectives.
• Knowledge of professional nursing theory & practices, nursing assessment skills, demonstrate practical application of nursing theory and techniques to specific patient treatment situations, able to follow oral & written instructions in detail, prepare nursing care plans and maintain records, charts and reports.
• Possess exceptional problem solving and communication skills.
• Have the ability to deal with confidential matters between patients and/or staff and be able to maintain that confidentiality appropriately.
• Experience using a personal computer.

Other Requirements:

• Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States at the time of employment.
• At the time of appointment the selected employee must possess a Kansas licensure/temporary permit, or be given authority to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the Kansas State Board of Nursing. Must comply with Kansas Board of Nursing requirements for licensing renewal, i.e., provide proof of participation in at least 30 hours of continuing education every two (2) years, complete application and submit fee. Possess current BLS certification upon employment and update every two years. Mandatory participation in continuing education courses and in-service sessions in order to continually update nursing knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• Mobility to move about the general clinic rapidly, standing for several hours performing nursing functions in confined spaces. Manual dexterity to give injections and other duties requiring fine motor skills. Assist patients who are fainting by giving physical support to prevent injury and/or to assist in lifting or moving a patient. Physical ability to perform CPR as necessary until relieved by other staff or paramedics.
• AED unit, ambu bag, audiometer, blood pressure cuff, cast cutter, cyro-surgical equipment, ear irrigator, gomco suction, gurney, halogen light, nebulizer, opthalmascope/otoscope, oxygen tank & gauge, personal computer, pulse oximeter, scales, spirometer, stethoscope, surgical instruments, syringe, telephone, thermometer, titmus vision tester, wheelchair
• Some variable hours during evenings and weekends.
