Position Summary: The Registered Nurse (RN) at WMCC is responsible for acting as a patient advocate, developing and implementing nursing process.
Essential Functions:
- Acts as a liaison for WMCC between physician, patient, and community.
- Acts as a resource person to patients and caregivers for information and support relating to disease and treatment.
- Triages patient calls that come into the department.
- Provides care and support to patients and caregivers during treatment and procedures.
Working Conditions: Normal office working conditions where there is no physical discomfort due to temperature, dust, noise and the like.
Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred or equivalent education plus work experience required.
Required Knowledge and Skills: Current State of Michigan RN license required. Experience working in oncology and/or chemotherapy highly desirable. Chemo/Biotherapy Certification completion is highly recommended after 2 years of employment. Experience working with surgery patients desired. Must have or be able to obtain BLS certification. Excellent interpersonal skill to interact effectively with management, employees, peers and the general public. Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. Ability to interpret, comprehend and complete complicated and detailed projects in a timely manner. Ability to organize, prioritize and work independently. High degree of integrity to keep confidential all information related to WMCC patients, employees, physicians, and institution related information.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally to waist-high level. Requires sitting/standing for long period of time. Manual dexterity required to use computer keyboard or other office equipment. Excellent visual and auditory acuity necessary.

- Knowledgeable regarding treatment to patients diagnosed with cancer or related disease. Acts as a highly effective and capable educator and researcher.
- Perform all duties, clinical and administrative, of the Surgical Oncology staff nurse with competence and quality.
- Accurately provide professional health assessment and health promotion for patients and caregivers.
- Act as a health resource for patients and caregivers.
- Develop and follow up on referrals and is accountable for coordinating the care of the oncology patient throughout WMCC and with outside facilities, resources, and professionals.
- Act as patient advocate, promoting awareness of patient rights. Inform patients regarding opportunities to receive appropriate care.
- Demonstrate respect for individual patient values.
- Effectively use nursing process to develop a nursing plan of care. Assist in updating patient care summary.
- Document patient encounters properly and timely.
- Consults with physicians and nurses during patient’s hospitalization.
- Develops, utilizes and complies with protocol management.
- Maintains a level of productivity that supports quality, efficient, cost effective functioning of WMCC.
- Willingly participates in the performance improvement process, identifying problems and facilitating solutions identification and implementation.
