Yakima Valley College seeks an innovative full-time Reference Librarian in the Instruction and Student Services Division - Library and Media Services, who are active and accomplished in their discipline, who has a record of successful teaching or related experience, and who is committed to community college students and their success. This is a full-time, faculty (non-tenured) position, with an anticipated start date of January 2nd, 2024.
Reporting to the Director - Library and Media Services, theReference Librarianwill be committed to community college students and their success. The Reference Librarianapplicant will be accomplished and active in their discipline, committed to participating in a multicultural, interdisciplinary learning environment, and skilled in the technology of learning and research.
Essential Tasks
KNOWLEDGE:
  • Understanding of and commitment to the mission and educational role of a community college
  • Basic reference sources, electronic information resources and systems, and electronic databases
  • Privacy laws, copyright laws, regulations, policies, and ethics regarding libraries and materials

ABILITY:
  • Demonstrate an understanding and an appreciation of the wide variety of cultural and ethnic differences within a college community which may include participation in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion training
  • Provide Reference Service and instruction in the use of print and electronic resources to students, faculty, staff, and the community.
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Provide customer service to students, faculty and college employees concerning Library and Media services
  • Work as a member of a team with the goal of excellence in student support
  • Collaborate with college faculty, campus departments and programs
  • Work with non-traditional patrons
MINIMUM OUALIFICATIONS:
  • ALA - Master's Degree in Library Science (MLS, MSLS, MLIS) or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • College-level teaching experience or equivalent teaching experience
  • Experience with library management system
  • Ability to use and apply information technologies and delivery systems in developing information skills among users
  • Experience in an academic library environment or equivalent
  • Bilingual in Spanish (or willingness to learn) and English
  • Life long learner.

Qualifications
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide reference and instructional services to students, staff, and the community-at-large that include (a) developing and maintaining the circulating, reference, and online collections and services; (b) teaching in a variety of instructional contexts, including specialized class presentations and workshops, library orientations and tutorials, and on-line curricula; (c) providing reference services to remote users, including eLearning and students at our Grandview campus; and (d) participating in the continuing development of the library web site
  • Plan, initiate and implement effective culturally responsive strategies for creating an equitable learning environment for students from diverse backgrounds/educational preparation
  • Design and update guides (online/electronic and print) to improve access and use of the information including, but not limited to, the navigation of databases, subject and course-specific guides.
  • Develop, teach, and assess information literacy in various environments at various college locations including Canvas and one-time visits with classes or online presentations.
  • Assist faculty with the integration of library research and information retrieval skills in their courses both face-to-face and in the course management system
  • Assist in collection development management by reviewing, evaluating, and recommending new materials as well as evaluating and weeding materials (print and electronic)
  • Provide reference assistance according to an established schedule that may include evenings and weekends
  • Promote information services and information literacy instruction to the college community.
  • Collaborate with classroom faculty to provide resource-based library and information literacy
