In 1979, the Rhode Island Blood Center was established by the hospitals in Rhode Island as a private, not for profit agency to collect, test, and distribute blood products. Today, the Rhode Blood Center is a division of New York Blood Center and is among the nation's premium providers of blood products and services and an integral part of the Rhode Island community's health care system. As of December 2018, the Rhode Island Blood Center employs approximately 320 full- and part-time employees. • Resolve routine to complex serological problems of patients requiring transfusion therapy and inform hospital technologists, supervisors or physicians of results by telephone. Prepare patient consultation reports including transfusion recommendations /suggestions sent to hospital blood bank supervisors and Medical Director. Coordinate with blood bank supervisors, Medical Director and private physicians to provide the safest blood products for patients with red cell / antibody problems.
• Provide antigen negative blood from RIBC’s liquid or frozen inventory or from the American Rare Donor Program. Maintain rare donor inventories and rare and unusual donor/blood through coding and classification to maximize the effective use of rare and unusual blood types.
• Procure and maintain rare red blood cells and rare antisera inventories for use in testing. Maintain inventories of reagent antisera and laboratory supplies. Freeze and maintain rare red cells stored in liquid nitrogen. Maintain, test, evaluate and QC reagents and equipment. Assist in planning long-term capital equipment needs.
• Participate in rotating on-call (weekends, holidays, evenings, and nights) for consultation, patient work-ups, antigen negative unit selection or screening for transfusion problems.
• Keep current on Transfusion Medicine procedures and research and participate in educational programs such as lectures, seminars, and workshops.
• Perform and supervise performance of Competency Testing and Proficiency Testing Surveys as assigned by Supervisor.
• Maintain all files, records and forms pertaining to patient and donor testing in accordance with RIBC policies and appropriate regulatory requirements.
• Instruction of rotating technologists, pathology residents and hematology-oncology fellows, SBB students.


MLT or equivalent ASCP certification required. Must meet testing personnel requirements as described in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 for Highly Complex Laboratory.

 

Lab Tech I = 2 year MLT degree

Lab Tech II = 4 year MT degree or equivalent – CLS, MLS, 4 year bio + MLT or BB

 

Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds. Must also be able to stand for long periods and sit, stand, walk and lift alternately throughout the duration of the shift.

Data entry skills preferred.

2 years blood banking experience in a transfusion center or blood center Reference Laboratory.

 

 

The proposed hourly wage for the Laboratory Tech I position is $27.66/hour. The proposed hourly wage for the Laboratory Tech II position is $30.80/hour to $31.11/hour. Offers made to an individual candidate will depend on a variety of factors, including experience, skills, and job-related education.
