Job Title: Recycling Project Lead

Department: Youth Empowerment Services (YES)

Reports To: Sr. Manager, Fab Lab Operations

Supervises: None

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: N6

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

General Functions: The Recycling Project Lead is responsible for learning, operating, maintaining, and modeling utilization of the plastics recycling equipment at the Denelchin Lab and in partner locations. This position will be responsible for maintaining positive working relationships with rural partner communities, support community clean up days, and coach community members through the recycling program processes. The Recycling Project Lead will work with Fab Lab Instructors to develop Culturally Based Instructional (CBI) Recycling Units for communities to facilitate with their participants, and will facilitate equipment and program trainings both in rural communities and on site at the Denelchin Lab. This position will also be required to administer surveys and collect data throughout project implementation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with partner communities and participating community members.
  • Develop recycling training and process modules.
  • Assist in the development of a virtual training modules for new community members to gain immediate access to recycling training materials.
  • Revise, adapt and/or develop recycling focused education units to be implemented with K-12 students, in collaboration with the Fab Lab Instructors.
  • Test recycling focused education units with students at the Denelchin lab, and refine units as necessary to best fit the program, with the support of Fab Lab Instructors.
  • Ensure the recycling programs process modules and educational units are accessible on CITC’s Denelchin Lab website.
  • Support participating community members in implementing recycling relevant units with students at the local school, in collaboration with the Fab Lab Instructors.
  • Ensure that the educational recycling units are STEM focused, innovative, challenging, engaging, and include culturally relevant materials, including tracking weight of collected and processed plastic materials.
  • Utilize innovative & culturally responsive instructional techniques congruent with Native learning styles.
  • Assist partner communities with organizing and facilitating community recycling events and clean up days.
  • Deliver comprehensive trainings on recycling equipment, on site at rural partner communities and on site at the Denelchin Lab, with support from Fab Lab Instructors.
  • Assist communities in learning how to collect, clean, and sort plastics prior to the recycling process, including documenting weight of collected and processed plastics.
  • Ensure data for the recycling program is collected and submitted in a timely manner to meet quarterly reporting requirements.
  • Prepare reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing data and information on a quarterly basis.
  • Verify all program reports internally and externally are submitted in a timely manner, ensuring the program is prepared for internal and grant required audits.
  • Participate in recycling equipment training hosted by the manufacturer of the equipment.
  • Support implementation of Fab Lab recycling curriculum during school break camps and after school activities.
  • Maintain cooperative working relationships and ensure effective and timely written and oral communications with partners, staff and other personnel.
  • Establish and develop partnering opportunities when possible.
  • Participate in scheduled CITC meetings and community meetings off site as requested.
  • Participate in all required training and project partnership planning meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality according to regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in the field of education, engineering, environmental science, planning and evaluation, fabrication or related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of experience working with youth.
  • Two (2) years of experience creating and implementing lesson plans and trainings.
  • Two (2) years of experience with utilizing large equipment, including but not limited to, fabrication equipment.
  • Knowledge of plastics recycling processes and best practices.
  • Ability to lift 30-50lbs regularly.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon completion of a satisfactory state and federal background check.
  • Valid Alaska driver’s license and insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Alaska Native people, knowledge of their values and belief systems and ability to provide culturally competent services.
  • Experience working with Tribal organizations and/or within rural Alaska Native/American Indian communities.
