POSITION TITLE: Recreation Supervisor

CLASSIFICATION: Exempt

DEPARTMENT: Tamaya Wellness Center (TWC)
SUPERVISOR: Recreation Program Manager

GRADE: E1

Accomplishes the Recreation program objectives by planning, organizing, and supervising all functions required to operate and maintain all recreation programming. Oversees all of the functions required to operate the teen center, Kid care area, Physical Education for the childcare, and all other youth programs in the center.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

· Plans, develops, and implements healthy lifestyle/recreation programs and promotions for youth,

· Coordinates with Tribal departments and outside agencies to offer collaborative programming.

· Supervises and delivers safe and age-appropriate programs including early childhood Physical Education programs, after-school and break programs, summer youth programs, swimming activities, and athletic activities.

· Establishes, implements and communicates goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance with the TWC strategic plan.

· Pursues funding opportunities, writes program related grants, develops processes and provides oversight to measurement, evaluation, data collection and reporting processes to meet program and grant requirements.

· Improves staff effectiveness by counseling, training, and recommending disciplinary action for recreation employees.

· Identifies or develops age appropriate educational and promotional materials for use in health/fitness activities.

· Develops and maintains recreation program and policies and procedures and ensures that safety standards are met.

· Facilitates Staff Meetings; attends regular case management meetings.

· Oversees Tamaya Wellness Center drop-in Kid care services.

· Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.

· Maintains strict confidentiality of participant information.

· Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

· Assist in other Wellness Facility initiatives and administrative tasks as required.

· Supervises work of all youth wellness/recreation, staff, and drop-in Kid care staff.

· Performs other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate degree in health Promotion, Public Health, or other Health Sciences or related field plus three to five years coordinating health education/wellness/recreation programs is preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in delivering youth programs. Experience in developing program goals, objectives, activities, and outcome measurement. 3 years Supervisory experience required. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico driver’s license and be insurable under the Pueblo’s insurance.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Certifications:

· Knowledge of department organization, functions, objectives, policies and procedures.

· Knowledge of program planning, development, tracking and reporting.

· Knowledge of motivational techniques and practices in healthy lifestyle change.

· Knowledge of budget preparation.

· Skill in supervising, training and evaluating assigned staff.

· Ability to plan, create, and deliver informational and educational presentations and classes.

· Ability to gather and elicit public input on wellness needs.

· Skill in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs in a Windows environment.

· Ability to exercise independent judgment and work independently with minimal supervision.

· Knowledge of fitness, health and nutrition principles.

· Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

· Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action.

· Demonstrates a high level of competency in the health and fitness field, and continually seeks improvement in results.

· Ability to maintain confidentiality.

· Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

· Skill in youth group activity and sports leadership.

· Skill in making effective decisions in emergency situations.

· Knowledge of traditional form of government and pueblo customs and traditions.

· Ability to be certified in CPR and First Aid.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit or stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk, run, and participate in fitness and sports activities. The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in an office, a gym/fitness center, or outdoor setting with a moderate noise level where employee may be exposed to unpleasant odors, hazardous material and infectious disease. Work may also be performed outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts may occur while performing physical activities. Work environment may include exposure to life and death situations. Situations where protective gloves and/or protective face shields are needed may occur. Evening and/or weekend work is required. There is frequent interaction with program participants and Pueblo of Santa Ana staff members.
