SUMMARY:
Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board's Customer Service Department is accepting applications for a highly motivated Recreation Supervisor to work to intentionally activate downtown and surrounding regional park spaces and deliver park programs and services through collaborative community partnerships. Plan, schedule, promote, coordinate and manage the implementation of year-round, outdoor and indoor park programs (as space allows) and special events that meet the identified needs and serves diverse park users who live, work or play in the area. Ensure high level programs and services are in alignment with the mission, vision, values, goals and objectives of the MPRB and exhibit an appreciation and respect for a diverse environment, inclusive of many social, economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

This position will work variable hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Established in 1883, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) oversees a renowned urban park system spanning 7,059 acres of parkland and water. Featured among its 185 park properties are 55 miles of parkways, 102 miles of Grand Rounds biking and walking paths, 22 lakes, 12 formal gardens, 7 golf courses and 49 Recreation Centers. The MPRB is proud to provide services, programs and activities that meet the park and recreation needs of diverse communities and ensure race equity, gender inclusion and universal access. Altogether, MPRB properties receive about 30 million visitors annually, and employs approximately 617 full-time and 1,400 part-time and seasonal employees.

What You Will Do:

  • Responsible for planning, development, implementation, management, branding, marketing and evaluation of diversified park programs, and activities for all ages and abilities, for one or more sites, ensuring the activities meet the needs of those who live, work, or play in the Downtown core, as defined in the Downtown Service Area Master Plan.
  • Manage the multi-use, seven-day-a-week Park Pavilion Building, in collaboration with a partner vendor relationship that operates an onsite restaurant.
  • Assist in the recruitment, screening, hiring of staff and responsible to train and supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Perform administrative functions relating to recreation management software, payroll, budgeting, scheduling, fee collection, managing and scheduling facility rentals, securing facility revenue, and associated activities, including being accountable for all program statistic tracking, building attendance tracking, or other metrics required by the Board.
  • Work collaboratively with Marketing and Communications Department to promote interest in recreation facilities and program opportunities.
  • Secure funding for programs, including writing grant proposals, generating donations, establishing partnerships, gaining sponsorships and collecting fees.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.

WHAT TO DO:

Need to Have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Parks and Recreation Administration, Business, Sports Management, or related field.
  • Experience coordinating and supervising the work of others: at least four (4) years
  • Experience planning, developing, implementing, managing, budgeting and evaluating diversified recreation programs and activities: at least four (4) years.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience and education and training may be considered.
  • Valid driver's license.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience securing partnerships and sponsorships to support programming and events: at least four (4) years.
  • Experience with large-scale branding and marketing efforts: at least four (4) years.
  • Experience managing facility operations: at least one (1) year.

Skills Crucial to Success in This Role:

  • Knowledge of contemporary marketing principles and practices for diverse customer base.
  • Knowledge of contemporary principles and practices of parks and recreation, community event coordination, and management.
  • Knowledge of management, administration and the functions and needs of the MPRB.
  • Ability to secure sponsorships and partnerships to support program delivery.
  • Ability to thoughtfully organize and creatively administer a variety of recreation activities for enhanced service delivery to those who live, work and play downtown or in regional parks.
  • Ability to negotiate and meet deadlines and prioritize issues, identifying which issues require immediate attention and taking effective and appropriate action based on that determination.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.
