The City of Valdez Parks & Recreation team is hiring a Recreation Assistant who, under the general direction of the Recreation Coordinator,t is responsible to assist with recreation facility operations and coordinating and facilitating recreation activities, programs and special events. The Recreation Assistant must work successfully and collaboratively in a team-oriented atmosphere. This position is responsible to supervise temporary part-time recreation staff (Rec Staff I-VI).
This is a temporary, non-benefitied position that is anticipated to work 25-30 hours per week. This position will work various hours per week, which may include mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed. Rate of pay begins at $25.61 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum 18 years old with high school diploma or equivalent; and minimum one (1) year of experience in recreation facility operations, recreation programming, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification or ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire (training provided).
  • Food Worker certification or ability to obtain within one (1) month of hire.
  • Supervisory experience in a recreation setting or similar is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and provide driving abstract.
  • Must be able to pass background check.
  • Individuals in this position cannot be listed as having been convicted of child abuse or child neglect.

Essential Functions: (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the supervision and management of recreation facilities (recreation center, gyms, rock wall, and ski hill) operations and maintenance, responsible for maintaining facility safety, security, and cleanliness for all users and staff.
  • Assist in coordinating and facilitating community recreation activities and programs in the areas of arts & enrichment, camps and out-of-school time, outdoor recreation and environmental education, and sports, fitness and wellness for all ages and abilities.
  • Assist in coordinating community special events (Runs/Races, Halloween, Community Tree Lighting, Fourth of July, etc.).
  • Assist in marketing community recreation activities, programs and special events to the general public.
  • Assist in front desk operations, including program registration, memberships, and cash handling; perform daily deposits as assigned.
  • Assist in recruiting, hiring and evaluating staff.
  • Supervise and schedule recreation staff as assigned.
  • Supervise recreation activities, programs, and special events participants; Adapts programming for people with special needs, conditions or physical limitations.
  • Transport participants in a City vehicle as needed.
  • Assist with program, facility and staff reporting and record keeping.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
  • Provide customer service to program participants and parents.
  • Communicate with general public, staff and supervisors in a professional and timely manner; both written and verbal.
  • Work in a safe manner and report unsafe activity and conditions, and intervene as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for all participants; perform general cleaning and light maintenance as needed.
  • Work as a team member maintaining a cooperative attitude with employees, staff and supervisors.
  • Respond to emergency situations, renders aid as required and maintains accurate reporting.
  • Complies with all City and Department rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform office related duties and tasks (computer, phone, copier/fax, etc.)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:
  • Knowledge of recreation facility operations, including facility maintenance and risk management.
  • Knowledge of recreation programs and events, including planning, organization, and instruction based on industry best practices and standards.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ADA and DEC as it relates to recreation operations.
  • Demonstrates excellent customer service and communication skills with participants, staff, and parents.
  • Demonstrates leadership skills and an ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively with all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and policies; both written and verbal.
  • Ability to act as a role model to participants during activities, programs, and events. (cleanliness, punctuality and sportsmanship).

Physical requirement and work environment:
  • Work environment is varied and depends on facility, venue and program; may be indoor and/or outdoor year-round and include work in an outdoor environment during inclement weather.
  • Physical ability to walk, run, climb, and swim.
  • May be subject to frequent standing, walking and lifting (up to 50 lbs.).
