MobilizeGreen seeks a conservation minded Recreation and Wilderness Intern to work 16 weeks, full-time in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The Public Land Corps Participant will participate in a variety of work in support of unit Recreation and Wilderness programs.


This is an internship position designed to prepare you to perform the duties such as clerical work, assisting various administrative services essential to the
management, direction, and operation of the assigned office. Based upon a good working knowledge of the office and the programs under the supervisor's control, the Intern
resolves problems associated with the clerical work of the office


The work requires moderate to strenuous physical exertion including walking on steep or uneven terrain, bending, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds or more. Outdoor project work may require that personnel camp out and have long pack outs. Work can be performed outdoors where there is exposure to extremes of weather and temperature. Work areas varies from established administrative areas, recreation areas, and/or wilderness areas. The work may require the use of safety equipment such as boots, gloves, goggles, and hard hat. Outdoor work may require working and living under primitive conditions. Outdoor project work requires making decisions concerning weather.


The intern is designed to launch their natural and cultural resources careers. The RA will receive hands-on learning experience, mentorship, and coaching to complete mission-critical work while developing leadership, critical thinking, and strategic communication skills. This is a developmental program.

Location:  The candidate will be asked to report in-person at Shasta–Trinity National Forests, a federally designated forest in northern California, United States. Combined, they are the largest National Forest in California and are managed by the U.S. Forest Service. The 2,210,485 acre (894,552 Ha) combined-forest encompasses five wilderness areas, hundreds of mountain lakes and 6,278 miles (10,103 km) of streams and rivers. Major features include Shasta Lake, the largest man-made lake in California and Mount Shasta


Term:  16 weeks, starting mid-May; Full Time/40 hours per week


Host Unit: Shasta-Trinity National Forest


Duty Station: 360 Main Street, Weaverville, CA 96093

Position Duties:

  • Assists in the logistical requirements of the local unit’s recreation and trails programs while supporting post fire recovery projects.
  • Assists in assuring that recreation area and trails are maintained in accordance with standards.
  • May assist in the constructing and rehabilitation of minor recreation facilities, signs, and trails.
  • Assists in a full variety of needs in the handling and caring of stock, including grooming, feeding, and watering.
  • Assists with the maintenance of stock facilities, including fences, corrals, water systems, etc.
  • Assists in a wide variety of manual labor tasks involving trail maintenance and reconstruction work as assigned.
  • Assists in the assures that wilderness areas and trails are maintained to established trail standards. Assists in re-establishment of native plants at denuded campsites and abandoned
    trails by preparing the soil for revegetation, transporting plants to the site and protecting the site after revegetation takes place.
  • Works with other agencies, interest groups, and partnerships to accomplish wilderness tasks and studies.
  • May be directed by and work with other Forest Service employees engaged in trail maintenance and wilderness projects. Interacts with a variety of user groups such as backpackers, stock
    users, fisheries, floaters, rafters, airplane folks, commercial river and hunting outfitters.
  • Makes safety checks of wilderness camp areas, outfitter areas and records data for corrective action. Inspects assigned areas to determine compliance with regulations or specifications.
    Inventories signs and check for accuracy and maintenance level.
  • Gathers specific data on wilderness conditions.
  • Educates user groups on "Leave No Trace" camping techniques and packing out garbage.
  • Responsible for curtailing the improper management of human waste and educating people on importance of campsites placed away from water sources.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:


  • Associate's degree or background in Environmental Education and/or Natural Resource Management within 0-5 years. 
  • Experience in forest management planning and implementation.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Critical reading skills, and experience with information synthesis.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
  • Ability to pass relevant background check
  • US Citizenship (program requirements)
