Position Overview: 

The Novelis Global Research and Development team is seeking a R&D Metallurgy Co-Op. The person in this role will report to the Lead Scientist of the Metallurgy Cluster. The ideal candidate will be responsible for investigating crystallographic texture and intermetallic phase evolution of new high recycled content beverage can alloy products. This position will contribute to the establishing fundamental knowledge and the internal/external publications. 


Responsibilities: 

  • Investigate the crystallographic texture and intermetallic phase evolution of various recycle friendly can alloy products 
  • Identify the quantitative correlation between the alloy composition and the texture / phase changes 
  • Understand fundamental mechanism of microstructure and properties evolution 
  • Assess the immediate and potential risks and provide relevant solutions 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Junior or senior year in metallurgical engineering or materials science and engineering 
  • Basic metallurgical knowledge 
  • Basic data analysis (Excel) knowledge 
  • Hands-on experiences or basic knowledge on sample preparation and optical microscopy, mechanical testing, and electron optics 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Master in metallurgical engineering or materials science and engineering 
  • Analytical experience on crystallographic texture and phase identification of Aluminum alloys 
  • Experiences on SEM, EBSD, TEM and/or XRD 
  • Advanced data analysis, e.g. Origin, MatLab, MiniTab, Python, etc.
