What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a III-V Compound Semiconductor Device Project Lead to join our team. The selected candidate will be responsible for product realization (from prototype development through qualification and sustained production) of radiation hardened Compound Semiconductor microelectronics (CSME) products. We work in a highly collaborative environment to conduct III-V Compound Semiconductor research and development using epitaxial growth and microfabrication processes for a wide variety of microelectronic devices and integrated circuits with direct impact to our national security mission. Material systems include GaAs, GaN, AlGaN, InP among others.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

Lead creative research involving device and integrated circuit design in state-of-the-art III-V material systems such as GaN, AlGaN, GaAs, and/or InP semiconductors to advance Compound Semiconductor technologies and Sandia’s capability to deliver them to federal programs.
Anticipate customer and program needs, manage risks, cultivate options, and lead the technical evaluations & decision-making processes involved in delivering CSME products to ND and other customers.
Scope and manage resources to ensure timely, on-budget deliveries that meet quality objectives.
Collaborate closely with experts across and outside Sandia to realize high-quality III-V microelectronics products for programs ranging from fundamental research to small-scale device production.
Work within a team to iterate and optimize device designs based on test results and prototype performance.
Create, seek, and develop new opportunities that utilize our world-class III-V Microelectronics capabilities.
Partner closely with technical support staff to operate and maintain the integrity of our III-V tool sets and related facilities, characterize epitaxial materials, and fabricate test devices.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

*The Sandia job code title for this position is R&D Electronics Engineer.

Qualifications We Require

Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Material Science or relevant field plus seven (7) years of academic and/or industry experience or;
PhD in the above fields plus three (3) years of academic and/or industry experience
Ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire

Evidence of dedication to laboratory safety
Record of Compound Semiconductor Device research innovation, as evidenced by peer-reviewed journal publications, conference presentations, or patents
Three (3) or more years of academic and/or industry experience in III-V nitride, phosphide, and/or arsenide device design, fabrication and/or characterization
Experience with simulation of Compound Semiconductor Devices
Project management experience
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, including demonstrated abilities in effective leadership, negotiation, delegation, and conflict resolution in diverse team environments
About Our Team

The III-V Microelectronics Department is responsible for the research, development, and technology maturation of Group III-V Compound Semiconductors within the Microsystems Engineering, Science, and Applications Center. With highly collaborative teaming, we enable the creation, development and delivery of application specific microelectronic components addressing high-performance, harsh-environment communication, sensing, power, and control problems. Our products provide solutions to customers who need a trusted partner to create and deliver on stated performance, size, weight, power, and cost benefits relative to alternative technologies. Core department capabilities include electronic modeling and simulation; epitaxial design, growth and characterization; rad-hard microelectronic device and circuit design, microfabrication, characterization, and reliability; and high-reliability microelectronic product design, characterization, and delivery for high-consequence national security applications.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
