We are seeking an R&D Assistant Staff Member who is capable of supporting the advanced manufacturing research needs within the Intelligent Machine Tools group within the Manufacturing Sciences Division at ORNL. As a full-time R&D Assistant Staff Member your work will consist of supporting the computational modeling of machining, Machine Tools, and hybrid operations. The position requires working both individually and as a team to direct development of innovative analysis techniques, knowledge of manufacturing modeling, frequent and consistent review of related literature, and collaboration with other team members for the development of technical capabilities, demonstrations, proposals, oral presentations, and publications.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform fundamental and applied research in the field of modeling of machining and hybrid additive and subtractive processes
- Develop models to improve machining and machine tool precision.
- Interface with industrial partners to facilitate novel applications of advanced manufacturing technology
- Prepare and present research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, and others and at technical meetings

Basic Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience operating CNC Machine Tools including setups and NC programming.
- Experience with different forms of data acquisition from analogue and digital sensors.
- Experience using manufacturing software such as MasterCAM, Fusion 360, Matlab, Python, Solidworks, etc.
- Presentation experience at conferences and experience writing journal publiations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in both experimental and simulation-based methods for machining stability estimation.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever-changing needs
