Job description

Princeton University Library (PUL) is seeking two (2) candidates for the position of Rare Books Cataloging Librarian. The position reports to the Leader of the Rare Books Cataloging Team and actively supports the teaching and research mission of Princeton University by providing timely and accurate access to PUL collections through the creation and maintenance of bibliographic, holdings, and authority records for special collections. The scope of material to catalog covers rare art publications for the Marquand Library of Art and Archaeology, and a wide range of print and manuscript holdings in Special Collections. The Rare Books Cataloging Librarian will engage in the full spectrum of activities relating to the creation & management of data for rare book collections. Primary Responsibilities *Catalog acquisitions for the rare book collections of the Marquand Library of Art & Archaeology, and for Special Collections, with associated authority control work. Imprints range from the 15th century to the 21st, vary in format, and include many titles in languages other than English, chiefly French, German, Italian, and Latin. Cataloging must respond to specialist client needs as identified by curators and selectors. *Collaborate with related units to improve intellectual & physical control of rare book collections. *Participate in committee work relating to workflow, policies, system development, & management of digital assets. *Collaborate with other team members in collective professional development. *Use software applications and tools (e.g., MarcEdit, XSLT) to analyze & manage data. *Participate in professional activities, scholarship, and committee assignments within PUL, on campus, and in professional associations at a level to meet the criteria for continuing appointment. *Maintain current knowledge of national/international developments & trends in cataloging, metadata, and related areas. Key Qualifications Required *Graduate degree in library science from an ALA-accredited institution. *Cataloging experience including substantial original monograph cataloging. *Working knowledge of content & encoding standards such as RDA and MARC 21. *Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages relevant to the collections, as applied in cataloging or academic coursework. *Analytical & communication skills. *Problem-solving ability as demonstrated in cataloging. *Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects with a variety of colleagues. The successful candidate will be appointed to an appropriate Associate Librarian or more senior rank depending upon qualifications and experience.
