Responsibilities:
- Cleaning stalls and mare motels daily and cleaning turnout paddocks at least weekly
Providing hay, feed, supplements, and fresh water according to each horse’s schedule
o Clearing ice from water in winter
Grooming horses daily
o Removing botfly eggs as needed
o Applying fly repellant as needed
o Putting on horse blankets as needed
Turning horses into pasture or turnout paddocks daily as weather permits
Maintaining barn area – sweeping, washing, and general cleaning as needed
Cleaning of buckets and tubs used for feeding and watering daily
Cleaning all horse tack and equipment as needed
Under direction of Ranch Owner on Duty or Horse Owner, administer medications and appropriate wound care/bandaging
Under direction of Ranch Owner on Duty or Horse Owner, first aid delivery to horse(s)
o Contacts veterinarian in an emergency situation if unable to reach Ranch Owner on Duty and/or Horse Owner
Handling horse(s) for veterinarian, farrier, Ranch Owners, or Horse Owners during medical or other treatment
Loading and unloading horses from trailer as needed
Completing documentation daily tasks via provided documentation tools
Completing bi-weekly timekeeping
Following all Ranch barn rules
Maintaining open and effective communication with Ranch Owners and other members of the Ranch team
Coordinating each horse’s feeding and turnout plan with Ranch Owner on duty
Coordinating with Ranch Owner on duty on supplies and equipment needs
Skills:
- Experience in equine care and handling is preferred.
- Familiarity with farm operations and animal care practices.
- Knowledge of power tools and hand tools for maintenance tasks.
- Basic math skills for measuring feed quantities and other calculations.
This is a physically demanding role that requires working outdoors in various weather conditions. The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated, and have a strong work ethic. Prior experience working on a ranch or farm is preferred.
