Are you interested in pursuing a job in railcar repair and have some great experience? Savage's railcar repair team, at their new state-of-the-art facility in Gregory, TX, is looking for Railcar Inspectors. As a Railcar Inspector you will perform detailed inspections of trains and perform minor "running" repairs of railcars entering and exiting Savage's facility. You will also perform brake tests of outbound trains and direct instructions for railcar rebuild, repair, and inspect railway cars according to AAR, FRA, and company regulations. You will use a mix of hand tools, power tools, instruments, and other equipment to safely and efficiently perform light repairs on cars. You will also use portable or stationary devices to log repair needs based on their inspections. All repairs will be done under the supervision of a maintenance manager and you will work in tandem with railcar repairmen. This role requires a journeyman railcar repair background.

Here is what you will be doing:
  • Responsible for inspecting the daily inbound and outbound trains, ensuring exterior of cars indicates good order for either plant handling or class-1 rail freight
  • Will prepare necessary written estimates, reports, and forms. These could include bad-order forms, car-repair estimates, and records of billable repairs
  • Ensure compliance with all AAR and FRA standards, abide by Savage's railcar repair quality control program
  • Perform "running" repairs on railcars as they exit or enter the facility
  • Will perform a brake test of railcars before they leave the facility
  • Monitoring all repairs and supplies consumed for accurate inventory and billing to railcar fleet owners
  • Will use Customer provided software on Savage provided devices to update information about all railcars
  • Will assist railcar repairmen as inspection and railcar repair volume needs allow
  • Will work with two-four other crew members to safely perform railcar repairs and movements
  • Will assist in providing front-line compliance with Operation Clean Sweep and Savage 5S cleanliness and orderliness standards
  • Will perform or assist in re-railing activities as needed
  • Will work an alternating 12 hour work schedule (3 or 4 shifts per week). Work is currently slated for night shift (9 pm - 9 am or until work is completed)
  • Will work with and support logistics or admin coordinators in their pursuit of billing for railcar repairs

Requirements of a successful Rail Switch Operator:
  • Four-year journeyman carman experience required
  • Bubble leak knowledge preferred or Level 2 certified
  • Background in railcar handling preferred
  • TWIC credentials or ability to obtain TWIC credentials required
  • Familiarity with removing, repairing, and replacing defective components including wheels, safety appliances, truck and brake equipment, couplers, yokes, draft gears, and air brake valves
  • Ability to work at heights (with provided fall protection), on uneven terrain, and in confined spaces
  • A willingness to complete any assigned task(s) as long as they have been properly trained or are properly certified
  • A desire to learn the skills necessary to do the job safely and in a way that adds value to the Customer's operation and exceeds their expectations
  • A desire to learn additional skills that will grow the candidate and help provide value to Savage's railcar repair operations
  • Ability to complete basic data entry tasks in a computer or logbook to track consumption of parts and completion of work
  • Can read, write, and understand English
  • Able to follow written and/or verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Dependable and shows up on time and prepared to work for scheduled work shifts
  • Willing to wear required PPE
  • Conducts themselves in a professional manner at all times
  • Works safely at all times
  • Pass drug / alcohol test / criminal background check required for onboarding
  • The desire to treat and be treated fair
  • The ability to anticipate and think ahead
  • High School Graduate or GED equivalent
  • Savage is an awarded Military-friendly employer - previous military experience with ability to work on a team and follow procedures is a plus

Here are some of the physical requirements of this role
  • Railcar repair crews will work both indoors and outdoors every day and as a result will be exposed to the elements. Less than half of the time work will be in a covered area.
  • Railcar repairmen must be physically able to do the following:
    • Climb on and off railcars and locomotives safely
    • Operate railcar hand brakes
    • Operate rail switches
  • Must have the ability to work, walk, and stand on uneven ballast surfaces for long periods of time - at least 2-3 miles per day of walking can be expected
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Should also have the ability to use hand and power tools proficiently
