Job description

Covers the clinical area of Nuclear Medicine and the Nuclear Pharmacy.
Technical Assistant reports to and functions under the general supervision of the Technical Managers, Nuclear Pharmacist and the Unit Operations Manager for Molecular Imaging. Receives direct supervision from senior technical staff and nuclear Pharmacist. The role of the Technical Assistant encompasses the clinical/clerical areas of Nuclear Medicine performing day-to-day operations to assist technologists and patient service coordinator as well as assisting the nuclear pharmacist with day-to-day tasks. The technical assistant must be knowledgeable of the workflow within each area and work under the supervision of the licensed individuals within these areas.
Nuclear Medicine - Clinical & Clerical:

  • Works in harmony with others and functions as a team member while maintaining professional, effective and constructive working relations and communication with departmental staff, hospital personnel.
  • Achieves positive relationships with patients, families, visitors and other healthcare providers and contributes to a favorable public image of the overall hospital.
  • Work habits and job performance must meet department standards.
  • Willingly offers and assists clinical staff as necessary during the patient study.
  • Embodies a proactive attitude and approach to patient care
  • Assist staff with both explaining the exam and positioning of patients
  • Provide bed pan and urinal to patients, when needed.
  • Provide a comfortable environment for patients.
  • Assists with patient transport
  • Maintains testing area in an orderly manner; prepares imaging/procedure rooms prior to patient use
  • Maintains the patient waiting areas
  • Assists in monitoring patient holding/waiting areas
  • Communicates patient status or concerns to management and/or resource staff
  • Pages and/or makes phone calls as requested
  • Oversight of the department's stock supplies (monitoring and replenishment) including linens.
  • Maintains emergency supplies and completes documentation checklist
  • Assists in the cleaning procedures for the syringe shields, "pigs" and carriers between patient use.
  • Clerical duties to include all aspects of exam scheduling along with performing patient related tasks (i.e. prepares check-in documentation, make confirmation calls, placing patients on call)
  • Any other related duties as directed by the Technical and Operations Managers.

Nuclear Pharmacy
• Maintains clean, neat, and well-organized work area
• Able to work independently
• Transports radiopharmaceuticals, as directed by technologist/nuclear pharmacy staff
• Performs package wipe testing and surveying pursuant to DOT/State Radiation package check-in requirement
• Communicates with pharmacist the deliveries received each day
• Performs daily cleaning of worksurfaces and floors in the sterile medication preparation area
• Performs daily cleaning of medication container
• Unpacks, cleans, and stocks nuclear pharmacy supplie
• Orders supplie
• Performs radiation safety related tasks (wipe testing, area surveys, equipment testing)
• Any other related duties as directed by the Nuclear Pharmacist.
SKILLS
  • Knowledge of universal precautions.
  • Knowledge of medical/Radiology supplies.
  • Knowledge of materials, equipment, supplies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of proper radiation safety/protection procedures.
  • Knowledge of the principles of growth and development of infant, early childhood, late childhood, adolescent, young adult, adult, senior adult and geriatric patients. Must possess the ability to assess patient specific data relative to age specific needs and provide age appropriate care.
  • Knowledge of Radiology Information Systems
  • Knowledge of Radiology Order Entry

• Employee will be trained in proper hand hygiene and garbing to work in a sterile medication area
• Required to complete and pass gloved-fingertip assessment of sterile glove application.
• Knowledge of materials, equipment, supplies and procedures.
• Knowledge of proper radiation safety/protection procedures.
• Completion of Radiation Safety Course
EDUCATION:
Minimum Required: High school diploma, GED or equivalent
EXPERIENCE:
Preferred: Previous medical, lab and/or pharmacy experience
