Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

 

Under the direction of the Director of Radiology, the Radiology aide will assist Radiology staff in the delivery of care by assisting the technologist in performing Radiological exams. Functions include veni-puncture, assisting with clerical responsibilities and transportation of patients between the ER, nursing departments and ancillary departments; and support delivery of equipment and supplies between imaging departments and patient care areas. Aide may be required to perform additional screening functions to ensure patient safety.

 

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Radiology and the general supervision of the Imaging Modality Manager and within established Catholic Medical Center and department policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following functions:

 

1.     Assists technologists with workflow to provide timely patient procedures. Follows verbal and written instructions from Technologists and physicians.

 

2.     Transports patient to/from the waiting room, dressing room or other nursing department to the  Imaging Department at request of Technologists via requested mode of transport and utilizes requested safety devices and/or personal protective gear ad needed; confirms patient identity utilizing two patient identifiers.

 

3.     Observe patient during transport using Patient Transport knowledge and techniques and notifies accepting staff of changes or difficulties with move. Utilizes complete knowledge of portable O2 usage and connects patient to portable or wall O2 as directed by nursing staff.

 

4.     Ensures all patients are properly gowned and prepped prior to entering an exam room.

 

5.     Gathers key documents, including imaging request, contrast screening/lab, comparative report information and/or translator form; communicates accurate essential information about patients to technologists.

 

6.     Assists the technologist in positioning the patient in the imaging suite as needed.

 

7.     Place IV for contrast injection.

 

8.     Performs additional patient screening to ensure patient safety.

 

9.     Answers phones, pages physicians and gives direction as needed.

 

10.  Maintains clean, well stocked areas.

 

11.  Processes requests to deliver equipment, supplies or documentation to various members of the imaging team to expedite patient procedures and imaging.

 

 

12.  Completes and maintains documentation as needed. Sorts, copies, and distributes department documentation as directed. Updates and maintains department computer files and reports as directed.

 

13.  Ensures confidentiality of employee, physician, and legal matters; respects and maintains patient rights and confidentiality at all times.

 

14.  Maintains good communications and customer relations skills; establishes and maintains positive teamwork and working relationships with employees, physicians and the public.

 

15.  Ensures clean linens are used for all transport equipment and follows all infection control guidelines and protocols.

 

16.  Exercises care in the operation and use of all equipment and reference materials. Maintains work area in a clean and organized manner.

 

17.  Participates in appropriate role in drills and actual disaster and emergency situations.

 

18.  Attends department meetings and participates in all required education.

 

19.  Wears appropriate uniform and maintains neatness and good hygiene in accordance with department dress code policy.

 

20.  Performs similar or related duties as required or directed.

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities and to possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices to safely perform the essential functions of the job:

 

1.     Sight, hearing, and speech capability sufficient to facilitate communication with employees, patients, and the public; observation skills sufficient to discern patient discomfort. Uses judgment and discretion regarding observed patient condition, and responds appropriately to obtain skilled professional assistance as needed.

 

2.     Ability to stoop, bending the body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist; kneel by bending the legs at the knee and come to rest on one or both knees; crouch by bending the body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.

 

3.     Ability to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction; move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances; use upper extremities to press against objects with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward; use upper extremities to exert force to draw, drag, haul, or tug objects in a sustained motion; raise objects from a lower to higher position or move objects horizontally from position to position; pick, pinch, twist, type, or otherwise work, primarily with fingers; apply pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.

 

4.     Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make fine discriminations in sound.

 

5.     Ability to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 t 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  (Strength Factor:  M-Medium Work)

 

6.     Ability to work in an environment which subjects incumbent to environmental conditions and activities which largely indoors, occasionally outdoors. Must be able to spend 90% of the work shift in motion, walking, carrying and pushing.

 

7.     Ability to wear gloves, masks, gowns, and other protective apparel.

 

8.     Ability to work with frequent interruptions and respond appropriately to unexpected situations. Even tempered and flexible, able to function unsupervised following standard practices. 

 

9.     Ability to plan and perform diversified duties requiring extensive knowledge of a particular field and the use of a wide range of procedures; judgment in the analysis of facts and conditions regarding individual problems to determine what actions should be taken within the limits of standard practice.

 

10.  Ability to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic background and ethnic systems. 

 

11.  Ability to work effectively with and wear on their person various communication devices, including telephone, pagers, two way radio, and cell phone.

 

12.  Must be able to work in any modality in Diagnostic Imaging and meet MRI safety specifications.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:             

       Able to work scheduled hours, which may include 1st and 2nd shift, rotating weekend and holiday schedules. Some overtime required based on workload volume or critical need situations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

       High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience:

       No experience necessary; one year of health care or customer service experience preferred.

 

Licensure/Certification:

       Phlebotomy proficiency within 6 months of hire.
