Our mission-driven team is seeking a bold and dynamic Radiological Engineer, Health Physicist who is fueled by problem-solving, continuously curious, and driven to understand our world, science/technology, and life itself, for the benefit of all on Earth and beyond.


DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support ionizing radiation shielding analyses of Axiom habitable spacecraft, including both geometry and materials, for varying Design Reference Missions as they pertain to crew health and safety.
  • Support astronaut radiation dosimetry, including both dosimeter data reduction and independent dose modeling.
  • Serve as an ionizing radiation Subject Matter Expert (SME) for interpreting radiation safety requirements and associated relevance for engineering design staff.
  • Support ionizing radiation detector and dosimeter design, definition, down-selection, fabrication, testing, procurement, telemetry, and data processing.
  • Serve as a health physics SME on various interdisciplinary committees and working groups.
  • Support the production of Axiom radiation safety documentation, to include data reports, white papers, policy and position papers, and standard operating procedures.
  • Support the proctoring/presentation of radiation safety and education courses for astronauts, aeromedical engineers, flight surgeons, and other stakeholders.
  • Develops knowledge and expertise to serve as a department SME, including learning new tasks to gain deeper knowledge and insight.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in physics, nuclear engineering, health physics, or related physical science / engineering discipline
  • 5+ years’ experience in radiation protection, radiation control, health physics, radiation safety, Radiological Engineering, or a combined equivalent of education and experience
  • Possession of National Register of Radiation Protection Technologist (NRRPT) or Certified Health Physicist (CHP) qualification preferred
  • Knowledge of the space radiation environment, including the effects of the Solar Cycle on the relative contributions of ionizing particles
  • Familiarity with space radiation dosimetry, including the radio-biological effectiveness of differing space radiation particle types (LET) as they relate to calculating effective dose to human tissues, organs, and whole-bodies
  • Knowledge of MCNP, Geant, OLTARIS (HZETRN) or similar particle transport code systems
  • Knowledge of radiation detector theory for both low and high-LET radiation fields
  • Experience with alpha, gamma (or equivalent) spectroscopy and spectrometer systems
  • Experience proctoring basic radiation safety briefings to general staff and specialists
  • Ability to prioritize and thrive in a fast environment and produce timely results while supporting multiple projects
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex information clearly to stakeholders and decision-makers

Essential Functions

Work Environment: Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.


Requirements

  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.

Physical Requirements

  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of the time). May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of the time).
